rchitecture student Justine Frischmann and changes courses. The pair become 
an item and Suave And Elegant gain a rhythm guitarist
Oct 89 Post-University, Brett and Mat put an ad in the NME which reads: "You
ng guitar player needed by London-based band. Smiths, Commotions, Bowie, PSB
. No Musos Please. Some things are more important than ability. Phone Brett.
..". Bernard, having been thrown out of London's Queen Mary College while st
udying history, is the first to reply, Mat: "Bernard fitted in straight away
, we knew within the first 15 seconds that he was the one."
Dec 89 The four piece, backed by a drum machine take a name, Suede is chosen
, because the "aesthetics of the actual letters make it into a graphic symbo
l".
Oct 90 A proper drummer is advertised for. One of the first to answer is ex-
Smith Mike Joyce, who sticks around long enough to play on their first (unre
leased) single
Nov 90 Suede sign their first record deal. A friend of a friend of a mate of
 Mat's, sets up a label, and agrees to release their debut single, "Be My Go
d". Once the single is pressed, a contract for a seven-album deal is produce
d. The band decline and the single never gets released
June 91 Simon Gilbert is found selling tickets at ULU   Justine leaves to co
ncentrate on her degree. "If you're playing second guitar with Bernard there
's not a lot of room," she says later. "I just ended up feeling like a twat.
""We weren't any good 'til we kicked her out," says Mat
Feb 92 The legendary Camden Falcon gig supporting NY slackers The Werefrogs 
sees the band giving such a potent display that journalists are forced to wr
ite things like: "Suede are imminent, serious cult superstars" and, "This ye
ars's most exciting group by a long long way".

March 92 Suede sign to Saul Galpern's newly formed Nude records for a two-si
ngle deal
April 92 Without releasing a record, Suede get their first front cover when 
Melody Maker dubs them, 'The Best New Band In Britain'.
May 92 'The Drowners' is released as the Nude debut. It goes to No 49 in the
 Network charts and stays at No 1 in the Indie charts for four weeks
Sep 92 'Metal Mickey' is released, going straight in the Network chart at No
 17
Oct 92 The band re-sign to Nude, with Sony licensing Suede outside the UK
Dec 92 Brett utters the infamous words: "I see myself as a bisexual man who'
s never had a homosexual experience."
Feb 93 After releasing the nominations for the Brit Awards, the BPI is criti
cised for their disregard for their selection. Undercover and KWS are the no
minations for the Best British Newcomer category
Feb 93 'Animal Nitrate' is released and crash-lands in the top ten. 'Animal 
Nitrate' is an ode to rough gay sex
Feb 93 'Animal Nitrate' is played live at the Brit Awards. Their "beautifull
y choreographed arrogance" bemuses an audience largely made up of industry s
tuffos
March 93 The video for 'Animal Nitrate' gets banned from the The Chart Show,
 because it shows two men kissing
March 93 Their debut album's original cover, depicting two women kissing (on
e in a wheelchair) gets banned from use. Instead, they take a headshot only,
 to protect the women's identities
March 93 'Suede', the debut album is released. Selling 100,000 copies in six
 days, it's the biggest selling debut album since Frankie Goes To Hollywood'

Feb 94 'Stay Together', an eight-minute epic, is released
April 94 Following a lawsuit brought by Washington DC country singer Suede, 
the band are forced to change their name in the US to The London Suede
July 94 It is announced that Bernard Butler has stormed out of the studio du
ring the recording of the LP and has left the band.
The remaining members issue a statement saying that they will be auditioning
 replacements.Butler releases his own statements, ending, "I am not insane, 
I am happy"
Aug 94 Titles under consideration for the new album include 'National Anthem

Sep 94 Richard Oaked is announced as Bernard Butler's replacement. A 17-year
