With the release of their new record, "Kid A,"

Radiohead have become England's reigning rock champions,

which, given the thoughtful and challenging nature of

their work since 1997's "OK Computer," is a stunning

accomplishment. Quiet and contemplative,

yet utterly dazzling in its restless creativity,

it may be the album of the year,

and it is definitely the strangest album to hit No. 1.

Three years have passed since U2's last album. The quartet's "All That You 

Can't Leave Behind" has been breathlessly anticipated by legions of fans. Wh

at direction are Bono and company taking? Will 2000 find them delving deeper

into trip-hop or returning to rockier terrain? 

For U2 fans who've been holding out for three years in anticipation of a new

studio album, the wait is almost over. And judging by the first single, "B

eautiful Day," the boys are getting back to their roots without becoming 

slaves to the past
