LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rock bard Bob Dylan turned 60 years old on Thursday, c
elebrating the milestone privately but giving pause to a generation of fans wh
o, like the performer himself, had hoped to ``stay forever young.''

Despite the recent wave of media attention focused on his passage into the rea
lm of senior citizenry, Dylan characteristically kept to himself for the occas
ion.

Numerous radio programs and nightclubs around the country were hosting special
 tributes featuring Dylan's music. But no major public events marking his birt
hday were scheduled.

Dylan's publicist would only say the singer-songwriter planned to ``experience
 his birthday privately'' and declined to say where he was.

Meanwhile, the World Wildlife Fund said Dylan had given it a present. It said 
Dylan had donated his song ``Shelter from the Storm,'' from the 1975 album ``B
lood on the Tracks,'' to the Fund for use in public service announcements on r
adio and television.

The group said it was the first time Dylan has allowed his words and music to 
be used for charitable purposes and that the song would be used in ads that st
ress how animals need shelter from environmental storms created by mankind.

Dylan's rendezvous with the big 6-0 has done little to slow down the veteran t
roubadour, whose music gave voice to an era of youthful revolt during the 1960
s and has transformed the sound and depth of rock 'n' roll for four decades.

He received an Academy Award in March for best original song for ``Things Have
 Changed'' (from the film ``Wonder Boys''), his first new work expressly for a
 movie in 13 years, and he performed the tune for the Oscar telecast by satell
ite hookup from Australia, where he was touring.

In 1998, he won three Grammy awards for his latest album, ''Time Out of Mind,'
' a meditation on aging and death that was hailed by critics as one of his bes
t releases ever.
Dylan, who has toured virtually endlessly since 1988, returns to the road next
 month with a show in Trondheim, Norway, kicking off a European trek scheduled
 to wrap up in Italy at the end of July before he returns to the United States
 for a series of performances.
In that sense, as expressed in a hit track from his 1974 album, ``Planet Waves
,'' Dylan has so far remained ``forever young.'' Or as he sang 10 years earlie
r, ``Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.''
