Bruce Ashby was one of the top-most figures in the Free Planet Alliance military annals, either in
fame or real victories. Born in Space Year 710, he died as an Admiral in 745, promoted to Field Marshal
posthumously. He was the great Commander who led the Alliance toward total victory in the Second Battle of
Tiamat, and those who matched him in fame were only Lin Pei-Oh and Yusef Toprol of the Battle of Dagone. An
instant hero like Yang could never hope to compete with them.
There were about ten dozens of published biographies, the backbone of many 3-D TV programs or 3-D
movies. The day he died, December eleventh, was decreed to be a national holiday of the Free Planet
Alliance. When he graduated from the Officer's Academy, he of course ranked first of his class, honored as
the most talented student since the founding of the Academy. He once fell to second place in his junior year
and he angrily shouted "it was a life-time shame." He and Yang, who happily assured himself that he wouldn't
fail any course this year, were as far apart as heaven and earth.
When he graduated twenty-year-old Bruce Ashby had a height of six feet two, well-proportioned body, a
sense of sharpness that only belonged to the younger generation, and handsome features. Everyone agreed that
just in terms of appearance he was way above other people.
Right now no one claimed Yang was "Bruce Ashby reborn." Because Yang never had any of those
necessary factors liked "composed handsomeness" or "apparently noble personality." Ashby should have his own
period of anonymity in his youth, but "his presence was more powerful than a full captain even when he was
only a junior lieutenant," as many would testify. it could also be seen in the documentaries or the
photographs he left behind, so it was no surprise that he could lead a huge fleet when he was still so young.
His sharp and bright eyes were full of authority that made its heavy presence felt by people around him, but
that strength was softened by the smile in the corner of his lips. He was the personification of the phrase
"carrot and sticks."
Bruce Ashby's HQ consisted of his classmates of Space Year 730, so they were called the "730 Party."
Of course, it was not truly such an exclusive group, but it was rarely for all kinds of talents cooperating
with one another fifteen years after graduation to start a great career together, so their presence was
especially worthy of attention.
Alfred Rogers, Fredrick Gasper, Wallace Warrick, Vittorio di Beldini, Fung Chiu-Lin, and John
Dorlinck Cope were all his subordinates, Admirals by their own achievements. Of them all only Alfred Rogers
was still alive.
No matter in his actions or the results, Ashby seemed to prefer dramatization. If life was a play,
then he was more a superstar than an actor. The fact was that all the battles he participated in became
famous later.
"First there is Bruce Ashby, and then there will be a battle."
Such comment might give the impression that Bruce Ashby was a ferocious militarist. He was promoted
to full Admiral at age of thirty-five, assuming the position of Free Planet Alliance Space Fleet Commander as
a purely professional soldier, harboring no doubts about war like Yang did.
However, Ashby was never involved in any scandals as a public servant.
"In order to fulfill his duty, Ashby used his power in his own aggressive, honorable ways."
This was the comment by Admiral Alfred Rogers who was trusted by Ashby. Ten years ago he published
an autobiography that won a non-fictional literature prize, itself regarded as one of the most precious
records in Free Planet Alliance military history.
Of course the Imperial military forces were not so ignorant as to have never heard of Bruce Ashby.
In Space Year 740 or Imperial Year 431, the words "Bruce Ashby, leader of rebel fleet" first appeared on
formal records in Imperial Ministry of War. By this time Ashby's existence was too important for the Empire
to ignore; it was due to his victories and propaganda.
Like most military heroes, Bruce Ashby had his aggressive and childish side. After he defeated the
Empire fleet he would send a telegram to his opponent to boast his own courage and wisdom.
"The man who crushed you is Bruce Ashby. Next time it will still be Bruce Ashby. Don't forget!"
It was understandable that the Empire leaders were furious.
"Dead or alive, bring the head of this enemy admiral before His Majesty's throne. The person who
accomplish this will win the highest honor and wealth possible as the Emperor's loyal subject."
Minister of War Kartolinc lectured to his subordinates, puffing the gray beard on the corner of his
lips. The Field Marshal's eldest son Hermann and second son Karl Heinz both died fighting Ashby. So even
from a personal point of view the Field Marshal hated Ashby deeply.
His encouraging words did have its effect on Empire admirals, but if desire and results were directly
linked, it would certainly lead to greatest joy in their life. Unfortunately, the Field Marshal did not live
to enjoy such victory. Before the Second Battle of Tiamat the Field Marshal became bed-ridden in his term of
office. He swallowed his last breath tightly grasping the hands of his visiting nephew Vice Admiral
Muckenberger, repeating the words "Kill Ashby" twice before his death. It was hard to say whether he was
heroically determined or merely stuboorn, but undoubtedly his hatred against Ashby was more than necessary.
It would not be difficult to attack Bruce Ashby through his weakness, since no one is without faults.
However, to exaggerate his faults and ignore his merits in order to break the myth would be rather unfair.
To be more accurate and fair it would be better if he could investigate the records kept by the
enemy, the Galactic Empire military forces. Through the Phezzan Dominion the Alliance could acquire Imperial
military annals and personnel records. Unfortunately, those facts were often twisted whether intentionally
or not through the processing. Anecdotes about Field Marshal Kartolinc were widely known in the Alliance,
but what about the truth?
The reason for Ashby's arrogant behaviors before the enemy included not only childish vanity but also
aspects of psychological warfare for sure. Anger and hatred overcame reason, drawing the attention of the
whole Empire on Ashby himself. This resulted in deviation of the Imperial military strategies from their
original goals, leading to his personal extravaganza time and again. It seemed that he knew very well the
ways to express his talents to the fullest extent.
Then Yang investigated records on Ashby's private life. In this aspect his achievements were no less
spectacular than his military career.
Bruce Ashby married twice, at twenty-three and then at twenty-nine. He had two divorces, at age of
twenty-six and thirty. Even when he was single he never lacked female companion; no, even when he was
attached he often visited that kind of places. His lovers and girlfriends added to more than a company in
numbers, including those he claimed and those who confessed their relationship.
"He is certainly hard-working."
Yang might not be all that respectful toward the man but Yang was not a saint, still desiring women
who would be interested in him. But he never thought of trying to work toward that goal. If he had such
extra energy and time, it would be better spent reading books.
No matter what, Bruce Ashby was quite proud of his colorful relationships with the opposite sex.
This was similar to "Hero of Dagone" Field Marshal Lin Pei-Oh, but the latter person stayed "single" all his
life in the legal sense. As famous an admiral was Yusef Toprol, his best partner(he would be furious if he
heard it). He was hard to please since "he disliked women but disliked men eve more," so his life was not
very exciting. But strictly speaking, although he wasn't married, he did have steady girlfriend several
times in his life. He never spoke any words of love or feelings but only insipid phrases like "The flu has
already kept a million people in their bed. Be careful so that you won't become the next patient." or "I am
a rough man so it would be difficult for me to notice small things. If there is something you need or don't
like, please tell me directly." It would be more appropriately called goals for this week than love letters,
but this was Field Marshal Toprol's true character.
There were always all kinds of people. It would be impossible for Yang to imitate any one of them,
whether it was Lin Pei-Oh's candor, Bruce Ashby's splendor, or Yusef Toprol's boring
