In the first half of the 740's in Space Year the universe favored Bruce Ashby, every battle a victory
for him. Even the Galactic Empire Minister of War died of anger. His martial valor left others a very deep
impression.
However, true to Rogers's criticism, this military genius was not a strategist but a tactician. In a
given battlefield no one could deploy an fleet in such uncanny ways, but strictly speaking this stopped in
the stage of constant victories, having no effect on the history of the universe.
"Thus the hostile relationship between the Empire and the Alliance did not change in any way since
the Battle of Dagone."
Thinking back through the military history he had learned so far, Yang spoke to himself.
In Bruce Ashby's era no giant fortress had been built in the Iserlohn Corridor. There were about two
dozen military bases with functions of supply, reconnaissance, and communication, spread out on the Alliance
side. But even the largest of them had less than four thousand personnel.
Until the Empire actually constructed the Iserlohn Fortress, the Alliance had also conceived of doing
so. Bruce Ashby himself had this in mind, proposing a basic blueprint to the Defense Committee. However, he
was too deeply mesmerized by the thought of commanding a large fleet that he withdrew the blueprint so that
the High Council would pass the proposal regarding powerful modifications of the fleet. Military needs did
take huge sum of money, and if it had to be spent, it would be better spent on fleets rather than fortress.
Such thinking was typical of Ashby's battle strategies. It was the so-called honor of a general.
A man so full of self-confidence and commanding presence would certainly have to endure constant
conflicts and friction with his boss. When he was still a lieutenant captain like Yang, once one of his
superiors shouted at him: "You are so full of yourself! You think that you won all those battles because
you could, not because of your luck, right? You think nothing is impossible for you?"
Ashby stared indifferently at his boss who was half-crazed with anger. When his boss's breathing was
a bit more even, he coldly threw down a bomb.
"Of course there are impossible things for me. I could never make a more serious mistake than you
did."
Only a man of even temperament and great magnanimity would not get angry at this. And such a person
would be very rare indeed.
Because of Ashby's ability and accomplishments, he was envied and avoided by his superiors. Of
course, one should not ignore his advisor/friends who assisted him. The "Party of 730" was consisted of top-
class talents.
Fredrick Gasper was a sharp, aggressive, straight-forward man. His nickname "Marching Tune Gasper"
was a sign of his explosive tactics. He was an experienced tactician who won beautifully but also lost in a
dramatic way.
"It's unlike me to do things half-way."
In his dictionary there was "quick victory" but no "close victory," "disastrous loss" but no
"regrettable defeat." His luck was so strange that after two consecutive victories he would always lose in
the next battle. All his subordinates remembered perfectly his records. When it was time to "lose."
"Damn! What rotten luck! It's time to lose again."
Some would mutter to themselves as they wrote their will. Some were pale with despair. Some even
deserted. This should not be seen as a joke, but Gasper with his black hair mysteriously received wide
support from the soldiers for some unknown reason. Wallace Warrick with his title "Baron" was of course not
a nobleman, an ordinary citizen under the democratic regime. But his appearance and behaviors were as
dramatic as an actor, so he was called baron. This nickname came from the comment that "he would never make
it to a duke or an earl. At most he could be a baron." But he did not mind such a mocking title, adding it
before his real name in all his self-introductions.
Warrick never reached the status of greatness, but he was a fully competent commander, a necessary
officer in Ashby's battle plans. A medium-height man with yellowish red hair, he mesmerized women and liked
them very much. Especially young, beautiful women with bright eyes and even teeth.
As an individual Warrick was multi-faceted, known for magic, fortune-telling, and ballroom dancing.
He also played guitar, performed with saxophone, liked to play chess, knew about throwing darts, and was good
at skiing, his emotional life rather colorfully decorated by many flowers.
"No matter what he does he is one step away from being a pro."
Admiral Rogers thus commented. Yang Wen-Li could detect a tinge of bitterness in his good-willed
comment. For Rogers, it was highly regrettable that his talented friend could not be determined enough to
truly pursue any one of his hobbies.
"I am satisfied with serving under Ashby. It's too much trouble being the person responsible for
everything. I...have always hoped to be only an 'excellent amateur.'"
Warrick was probably very used to obscurity. As a professional soldier, this was the essence. No,
maybe it should be said that because of this he was able to swallow the bitter memory with a sugary coat of
jokes. Warrick graduated second place in the Officer's Academy. Before him was always Ashby. To purify
this complex mentality, it was probably necessary to joke a little.
John Dorlink Cope's name was an unintentional irony. His body was allergic to alcohol, so he
couldn't touch a drop of it. Even when they were celebrating a victory, he would toast with apple cider.
Once Warrick switched the content, and after he drank it he immediately broke into rashes on his whole body.
Everyone was scared out of their wits, causing a great commotion. Although it was pretty much his own fault,
but because of this Warrick became the only admiral who wrote a penitence report for rashes in the Alliance
military history.
Cope was also an admirable tactician. He could satisfactorily complete his tactical objectives,
contributing much to Alliance victories. He was especially adept at pursuing fleeing enemies.
Vittorio di Beldini was generally seen as a rough sergeant-type front-line soldier. His ferocious
battle tactics and fearless attitude made him more destructive than Ashby.
With the hulk of a heavy-weight champion, bronze features pockmarked by many tiny wounds, and short
steely beard, his forceful appearance indeed strengthened his image as a rough general. He was married to a
petite woman half his size, which Gasper mocked as "a marriage between a bear and a squirrel." But he still
had a huge smile on his face, paying no attention at all. His hobby was feeding tropical fishes. Reportedly
he named his favorite fishes after his colleagues, but it had yet to be verified.
Fung Chiu-Lin's name was E-type (Eastern), same as Yang, Fung being his last name. His tactics was
far from ingenious but his thorough calculations and almost perfect preparation made it foolproof. He would
never lose disastrously, and when the tide of battle was against them he was the only one who could stand his
ground and try to reverse the situation. This happened more than once in the past.
His personality was rather ascetic and serious. When everyone else was having a fit after hearing a
joke, his lips won't even twitch. Once for some unknown reason he told an erotic joke e heard from others.
Because it was a masterpiece, his colleagues all laughed. But when they calmed down a little, he actually
asked them: "What's so funny about that story?"
Faced with a question in such serious tone, no one could find anything to say. His subordinates, his
superiors, and even he himself would trust this orderly man the most, but they absolutely did not like him.
In addition, there was Alfred Rogers. He did not have great strategic talent like Ashby, but he
could bring together opinions from different advisors, playing the role of buffer zone between diverse
strong-willed personalities, his superb organizational ability and objectivity leading the daily coordinated
operation of Ashby's HQ. In order for all kinds of talents to perform their functions in a group, a living
adhesive was necessary, and this was the meaning of Rogers's existence. As an individual commander Rogers
performed only slightly above the ordinary, but when he joined Ashby's HQ, he magnified their strength as a
whole, leading to incomparable accomplishments.
Rogers sat on Ashby's HQ as his chief advisor for six times, for a total of ten years. After Ashby
became Space Fleet Commander on March of Space Year 745, Rogers was awarded the position of Space Fleet
Chief Advisor by June. Many people commented that it was those in Party of Year 730 again. Although this
personnel adjustment was rammed through, but the partnership of Commander Admiral Ashby and Advisor Vice
Admiral Rogers apparently raised the battle strength of Alliance Space Fleet, silencing critics by real
results.
