The European Space Agency's SOHO spacecraft has discovered massive earth-sized
tornadoes on the surface of the sun. SOHO detected a dozen tornadoes with wind
gusts of up to 300,000 mph. "We see the hot gas in the tornadoes spiraling away
from the sun and gathering speed. These spectacular events in the sun's
atmosphere must have widespread effects," said British scientist David Pike.
SOHO, which was launched in December 1995, observes the sun from 900,000 miles
out in space.
