On October 4, 1957, the United States was shocked when the Soviet Union launch
ed the first satellite into orbit. Sputnik 1 was a small sphere carrying a rad
io transmitter which "beeped" a signal for all the world to hear of the suprem
acy of Russian technology. A month later, on November 3, Sputnik 2 was orbited
carrying the space-faring dog, Laika.
In November 1957, President Eisenhower went on television and showed the first
U.S. man-made object that survived the heat of reentry and had been revobered
. The solution to that problem was one of the main keys to successful manned s
paceflight as well as successful ballistic missiles. Eisenhower emphasized tha
t although we were preparing to launch a satellite, our major effort focussed
on development of ballistic missiles, not on space. In 1958 the president esta
blished a civilian space program and created the National Aeronautics and Spac
e Administration (NASA) to oversee it.
