Japan rules the #2 and #3 slots with the University of Tokyo (7,565 papers 
cited a total of 74,682 times to date) and Kyoto University (8,218 papers 
cited a total of 74,539 times to date), respectively. Tokyo’s citation 
record includes highly cited papers on ion-selective electrodes, while Kyoto
’s highly cited work includes research on photoinduced DNA cleavage. Other 
institutions from Japan making this list are Osaka University (6,582 papers 
cited a total of 55,618 times to date), Tokyo Institute of Technology 
(6,845 papers cited a total of 53,236 times to date), and Tohoku University
