Bombykol, the first pheromone to be characterized chemically, is produced by t

he female silkworm moth (Bombyx mori) to attract potential mates. Receptors on

 the antennae of male silkworm moths can sense individual molecules of bombyko

l in the air, and they can distinguish bombykol from other molecules that diff

er by as little as one double bond.
