Practical Issues in Design of IGBT Inverters
Abstract
IGBT inverters have found wide industrial applications such as uninterruptible power supplies, electric drives, switch mode power supplies, wind/solar energy systems, STATCOM, active power line conditioners, and dynamic voltage restorer. For inverters with a power rating from a few kilowatts to 500KW, IGBT devices are exclusively employed.
The seminar addresses a number of practical issues concerning the design of the IGBT inverters. The topics include IGBT switching characteristics, turn-off voltage overshoot, turn-on current overshoot, switching loss, snubber circuits, loop inductance, laminated bus bar design, and short circuit protection. Most of the topics are elaborated with experimental results. The seminar, to be delivered with drawings, charts and pictures, provides valuable guidance for the design of practical inverters.
About the Speaker
Bin Wu received his Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Toronto in 1993. After being with Rockwell Automation Canada as a Senior Engineer, he joined Ryerson University, where he is currently a Professor and Ryerson Research Chair.
Dr. Wu has published over 100 technical papers, authored a book, and filed 11 US patents. He is the founder of Laboratory for Electric Drive Applications and Research (LEDAR), which has become the best of its kind in a Canadian university. His honors include Gold Medal of the Governor General of Canada, Premier's Research Excellence Award and NSERC Synergy Award for Innovation. He is an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, and Chair of the Industry Relations Committee of IEEE Canada.
