Today Nature:单原子与其镜像间的光干涉
单个原子发射单一的声子,是最基本的光源所具有的光学性质.目前利用一个简单系统(由
一个或两个单原子,一束激光,一个透镜和一面镜子所组成)就可以观测到它的细节.在合
适的距离处,镜子将光反射回激光照亮的原子源,通过干涉促进或抑制发射事件.由J. ES
CHNER等人在今天Nature上报道的这一实验对于未来量子信息处理无疑是一个令人鼓舞的
消息,因为后者要求一个原子的量子态可以与光学腔的振动模相耦合.

Quantum optics: On reflection
The optical properties of the most fundamental light source, a single atom e
mitting single photons, have been observed in remarkable detail in a simple
system consisting of one or two single atoms, a laser, a lens and a mirror.
At the appropriate distance, the mirror reflects light back to the laser-ill
uminated atomic source and, through interference, either enhances or suppres
ses emission events. The experiments are encouraging for the prospects for q
uantum information processing which requires coupling of an atom's quantum s
tate to the modes of an optical cavity.
