现在全世界大约有30个实验室成功的实现了波色-爱因斯坦凝聚(BEC,即一种在低温下物
质存在的形式,此时超冷原子间彼此不可分辨,形成一个"超原子").本周Nature报道的一
项该领域的新进展则为BEC凝聚体实验开辟了令人兴奋的新天地.W. H?NSEL所在实验室采
用的BEC制备方法非常简单,也许会使更多的实验室从事该领域的研究.在这一新技术中,
凝聚体是在一个芯片上的小磁光井里实现的,形成时间700ms,比其他一般方法快10倍.

Bose-Einstein condensation: 'Superatoms' on a microchip
About 30 labs around the world have succeeded in producing Bose-Einstein con
densates, a low-temperature form of matter in which ultra-cold atoms become
indistinguishable from one another, creating a 'superatom'. An advance repor
ted this week opens up exciting possibilities for experiments with condensat
es - and by making their preparation much simpler, may increase the number o
f labs working in the field. In the new technique the condensate is formed i
n a small magnetooptical trap on a chip in just 700 milliseconds, 10 times f
aster than in most other methodologies.
