XIA XUANZE and Zhang Ning were today crowned King and Queen of the Badminton W
orld.
Former Yonex All England champion Xia, the fifth seed, beat ninth seed Wong Ch
oong Hann at the QI IBF World Championships at the National Indoor Arena in Bi
rmingham.
And in doing so he ruined Malaysian dreams of a first world men's singles cham
pion.
Xia made it 8-0 in head-to-head clashes with Wong ...but it was a compelling c
ontest with the Chinese ace coming out on top after 86 action-packed minutes 1
5-6, 13-15, 15-6.
Initially Xia was 'so excited I have not got the words.' But he was soon talki
ng about this being 'the next step' with the Olympics being the new big target
.'
He rated his clash with Denmark's Kenneth Jonasson in the quarter-finals as th
e toughest match, he said through interpretor Crystal Bramley, who passed up l
ine duties in the women's doubles to translate.
The women's title went to second seed Zhang, who beat defending champion Gong
Ruina 11-6, 11-3 in 44 minutes. The 28-year-old was soon on the telephone to h
ome to relay her triumph to her boyfriend.
China's third win came in the women's doubles, where third seeds Gao Ling and
Huang Sui, the defending champions, beat top seeds Wei Yili and Zhao Tingting
15-8, 15-11 in 63 minutes.
And that made up for the title that eluded them on finals day. Olympic and wor
ld champions Zhang Jun and Gao Ling, the top seeds, were outplayed by old riva
ls Kim Dong Moon and Ra Kyung Min of Korea.
That avenged their Olympic and world championship defeats - it was 17-16 in th
e third in Seville - as the Koreans won 15-7, 15-8.
But then Kim and Ra had served notice by the way they won their clash with Zha
ng and Gao in the Sudirman Cup final in Eindhoven when they won 11-8, 11-0.
