说明: This is the 152nd Deal of the Week, but it is one of the only
deals we have presented that is mostly about the bidding. The truth is
that generally we find spectacular declarer play and defense to be the
most stimulating aspects of bridge. When your partner bids as well as
Brad Moss did on the deal, however, you just have to let the world
know about it.
This deal was player in the round of 32 of the recent Spingold
at the ACBL's Summer Nationals in San Antonio. Fred Gitelman, the Presi-
dent of Bridge Base Inc., was playing with Brad Moss when this week's
deal was player.
Fred and Brad (along with Reese Milner-Marc Jacobus and Gabriel
Chagas-Marcelo Brance) were not seriously challenged in their round of
32 match (this deal helped). They were unlucky, however, in drawing the
Nickell team (Nick Nickell-Richard Freeman, Jeff Neckstroth-Eric Rodwell,
Bob Hamman-Paul Soloway in the round of 16. The Nickell team won a hard-
fought match and went on to win the Spingold.
In a sense this deal is about declarerplay as Brad was able to
figure out Fred's hand during the bidding. He then planned the play in
various strains and was thus able to place the final contract with
complete accuracy. Nicely bid partner!

After West opened 1C, Fred made a takeout double on the North
hand.
Fred has spent most of his bridge career overcalling 1H on such
hands. After seeing the spade suit get lost enough times after overcall-
ing, Fred has been a doubler for the past couple of years.
After seeing how well double worked on this deal he is unlikely
to switch back to overcalling anytime soon!
East passed and Brad responded with a 2C cuebid on his montrous
hand.
West rebid 3C and Fred's 3H was a key bid in allowing Brad to
eventually select the winning contract.
Alough thay had never discussed it, Fred and Brad both reasoned
that 3H had to show a 5-card suit.
With a more classic pattern for a takeout double (that is, no
5-card major) Fred would not bid a suit here. He would either pass 3C
around to Brad or double again (to suggest a balanced hand with extra
values).
Brad was further able to infer that Fred was dealt 4 spades.
He knew that Fred would have overcalled 1H on most hands containing a
5-card heart suit. Fred would only double on such hands if he had lots
of points (clearly not the case here) or a side 4-card spade suit.
Furthermore, Brad also knew that Fred had to have a singleton
or void in clubs as Fred would have certainly overcalled 1H with 4522
distribution and minimum high card values.
Brad was pretty sure that he knew Fred's exact distribution.
There was only one more thing he needed to know in order to select the
best final contract.
Brad needed to know how many Aces Fred was dealt.
Whe Fred showed 2 Aces, Brad confidently placed the contract in
6S, despite holding such strong support for Fred's heart suit.
6S was the final contract.
As you can see, it was a great contract. 6H would have depended
on the diamond finesse (which would have lost), but 6S was practically
certain to succeed.
How did Brad know this? He had visualized with complete accur-
acy how the play of the hand was going to go in both 6S and 6H.

West could have actually defeated 6S had he selected a heart(!)
as his opening lead.
A high club seemed like a more natural lead, of course, and
West won the first trick.
West continued with the CK and Brad ruffed with dummy's S9.
He played a spade to his hand and ruffed his remaining club with
the SA.
Brad come back to his hand with a trump.
He then claimed the rest of the tricks, stating he would draw
trump and discard his diamond loser on dummy's fifth heart.
Yes, it is very nice to have a partner that is so good at this
game!
