More info: A renowned theoretician of Russian origin, the ex-World n° 5 was
 a long-time second of Kasparov and then Anand’s, the FIDE World Champion 2
000.
The 80s’ took him to the summit of the World’s elite.
In 1985, when he had no international title, he tied for first place in the 
prestigious Championship of the USSR.
Two years later, after numerous victories he was ranked n° 10 on the FIDE r
ating list. Being the favourite of the Interzonal in Manila 1990, he missed 
his chance losing two crucial games at the end of the tournament. In 1991 he
 won the Munich tournament but afterwards he was outdistanced by his younger
 adversaries of the 90s’.
Looking at his results in 2000, this “professional to the bone”, with Dost
oietsian profile seems to have found a second youth. Last October has affirm
ed this with a beautiful over Anatoly Karpov in Trophy of the Continents in 
Cap d’Agde. He is still one of the World’s top players.
