Agony over Ruud block
By ALEX FERGUSON
FOR a long time we had been monitoring
the progress of Ruud van Nistelrooy
because his remarkable scoring feats with
PSV Eindhoven identified him as a striker
of the highest calibre.
Now everything was in place to enable us
to sign him and on Sunday, April 23 he
flew to Manchester for what were assumed
to be the formalities of completing an
?8million deal.
That evening I had dinner with Ruud and
his girlfriend Lillita, Steve McClaren, Jim
Ryan, Jaap Stam and his wife and Roger
Linse, who is Van Nistelrooy's agent.
There was a lovely warm atmosphere and
it was easy to sense that Ruud was keen
to join us.
I was quite excited, for I could tell just by looking into his eyes that this was a
young man of substance.
The relaxed mood was not clouded by undue concern over some trouble Van
Nistelrooy had been having with his right knee.
His description of the symptoms indicated to me that a medial ligament was
involved and I was not terribly perturbed.
My main concern at that stage was that PSV Eindhoven had given out news of the
transfer.
I don't think that is proper. The buying club, not the selling club, should control the
public relations associated with a move.
Unfortunately, I had picked out the couple of days set aside for his medical as my
best chance of a short break in Spain to recharge my energies.
ALTHOUGH I regretted not being on hand when Ruud had his tests, I was optimistic
about the outcome and in cheerful spirits as I headed for a brief stay at a friend's
villa in Malaga.
At lunchtime I spoke with Steve McClaren and, apparently, everything was in order.
By tea-time I had gone into the villa and Sky News were covering events direct from
Old Trafford, where a press conference was about to start.
Just then my mobile rang and it was Steve with grim news. There was serious
concern about Ruud's cruciate ligament.
I talked with Mike Stone, the club doctor, and Jonathan Noble, our orthopaedic
specialist, and they told me they were not prepared to pass the player on the
evidence before them.
It was shattering news and my thoughts went instantly for the lad, himself. I kept
wishing I was there to offer personal support.
It was imperative I speak to him and when I did I tried to be as positive as
possible, emphasising we might yet find a way out of the nightmare.
OUR medical people suggested he should have an arthroscopic examination to
determine exactly what was wrong and I don't think there was anything
unreasonable about that.
Equally, I think Ruud was right to turn it down, on the grounds that he wanted to
play in Euro 2000 and having the arthroscopic examination could have harmed his
chances.
After both sides had discussed at length what the next step should be, it was
decided Ruud would return to Holland to continue remedial treatment.
Soon we had the devastating word from over there that he had broken down and
was facing the full horror of a seriously damaged cruciate.
I had to go across and see him at his home to let him know the depth of the
sympathy I felt for him.
Within a week or so, he had gone from being on top of the world, looking forward
to great years with United, to being in the darkest place he had ever known as a
footballer.
The club's disappointment was severe but that mattered a lot less than the
suffering Ruud was going through.
Our day together in Eindhoven convinced me Ruud has the strength of character to
cope with his ordeal.
I am sure he will come back as the outstanding player who thrilled so many of us
such a short time ago.
He has the drive he will need to resurrect his career. With all my heart, I wish him
well.
