Becks row: What really happened
EXCLUSIVE by SIR ALEX FERGUSON
IT IS the story they all wanted, but we
have it exclusively.
Sir Alex Ferguson, the most successful
manager in English football, lifts the lid on
last season's row with David Beckham.
Here is part one of the blockbuster Fergie
story:
IT doesn't matter to me how high a
player's profile is. If he is in the wrong, he
is disciplined.
And David Beckham was definitely in the
wrong before our top-of-the-table clash
with Leeds last February.
At first he simply refused to accept that he had anything to answer for.
And that made me lose my temper badly, something I hadn't done for years.
Because of all the hype that constantly surrounds David, my decision to leave him
in the stands for that match at Elland Road became a bit of a drama.
Yet it was quite straightforward for me.
Our visit to Leeds to take on David O'Leary's youthful and exuberant team was
always going to attract a lot of attention.
But it became a far bigger story when Beckham failed to turn up for our training
session on the Friday before that game.
He worsened the problems between us when we met up on the Saturday and he
failed to convince me that he had a satisfactory reason for being absent.
And that made me blow up.
THE explanation that young Brooklyn Beckham was unwell would normally have
made me totally sympathetic.
I would expect a parent to put a child's welfare in front of everything else.
But when it was well known that Victoria was out in London on that Friday, I had to
think David wasn't being fair to his team-mates.
Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cannot count on being regulars in
our first team but they are model pros who never miss training.
I had to imagine how they would feel if David could just adjust the schedule to suit
himself.
There was no way I could consider including Beckham in the team to meet Leeds.
That much was crystal clear in my mind.
Some thought the importance of the Leeds fixture would save him from being
dropped.
But rules and principles don't mean much if they are bent the moment there is a
practical disadvantage in applying them. I don't go out of my way to prove to
people who is the manager.
But, from time to time, somebody in my job is confronted with a situation which
must be handled in a manner that signifies control.
THE after-effects of the episode were entirely positive. It brought home to David
the seriousness of my attitude about how he should prepare for games.
Living in the south of England was not fair to me, the club, his team-mates or the
fans who have supported him so loyally. Nor, in football terms, was it fair to him
and there is no doubt he benefited afterwards from recognising more clearly that
his apartment in Cheshire must be his working base.
I often think of his parents and of all the sacrifices they were glad to make in his
interests.
When he was a boy, they used to bring him along to every match we played in
London and I had many conversations with them.
They were concerned about his height, wondering if he was ever going to grow, and
I used to reassure them that he would be a six-footer.
DAVID is a loving son who appreciates everything his mother and father did for
him and I am certain he won't let them down.
He will work at having the great career they always wanted him to have.
The strongest guarantee is that the boy just loves playing football. He could never
do without it.
