Big Mao-th Bates full of himself

HAS any chairman since Mao had more
faith in his own opinions than Ken Bates? 

If laying down the law was an Olympic
sport, the Chelsea chief would be
staggering under the weight of gold
medals. 

And I don't suppose he will ever change. 

Just about everybody in the game has
had to take the sharp end of his tongue
or put up with being a target for the
aggression he pours into his writings in
the club programme. 

Any manager or player who said half as
much would never be out of Lancaster
Gate. 

We were on the wrong end of a 5-0 rout
at Stamford Bridge last October. 

Bates decided the result had given him
limitless gloating rights but the truth
about that one-sided match is that it did us more good than it did Chelsea. 

Their Premiership challenge collapsed while we took the lesson well. 

We wasted little time in putting our title pursuit back on course. 

Before that game I had said in an interview that Chelsea were the same team they
had been the previous year. 

That assertion was slightly inaccurate. 

In 1999 they finished third in the table. In 2000 they were fifth.
