Applying for Study Abroad

Want to study abroad? It's important to find the right program and
plan ahead. Take the process step by step, and you'll be overseas in
no time!

Step 1: Inventory Your Needs

Before you begin, ask yourself some questions:

Where do you want to study? In a big city? In a small town? In a more
developed country? In a less developed country?
Do you want to go where you know the language? Do you want to learn a
new language?
When can you go? For how long?
What do you want to do? Study in a traditional classroom setting?
Conduct field research? Volunteer? Work as an intern?
Do you want to fully integrate yourself into the culture? Do you want to
have contact with other Americans?
Would you like support from an on-site American advisor? Do you want a
less structured program?
Do you want to take courses in English or in a foreign language? A
little of both?
Do you want to take courses in your major or extracurricular courses?
Where do you want to live? With a family? In a dorm? In an apartment?
With other Americans? With local students? With students from many
different countries?
Step 2: Explore Your Options

The best place to learn about the programs that are available is your
school's study abroad office. If your school doesn't offer this
resource, turn to the Internet for help finding programs:

When assessing study abroad programs, keep these questions in mind:

Are you eligible?
Can you afford the program, and if not, is financial aid available?
Can the credits you earn be transferred to your home school?
Will this term abroad affect your graduation date?
Step Three: Do Some Research

To make sure things run smoothly, investigate your program and its
effect on your educational plans in advance. Speak to an advisor in your
study abroad office (if applicable) and an advisor in your department.
In addition, get in contact with someone who knows the destination
you have chosen - preferably someone who has participated in your
program. Use their input to help you plan the best possible study abroad
trip - and to ensure a smooth transition back to your home school.

Step 4: Apply

Admission requirements vary, but they typically include essays and
recommendation letters. You may also be required to submit a proposed
course of study. Some programs are competitive, so prepare a back-up
plan in case you aren't selected.

When applying for study abroad, don't procrastinate! Application
deadlines range from February to April (for fall, academic year and
summer programs), and from September to November (for spring programs).
Some programs enroll according to rolling admissions (i.e. first come,
first served). The earlier you start the application process, the
better.

Even if you are running late, don't be discouraged. You may have
missed your first choice programs, but there are still many
opportunities available.

Do your planning in advance, and get ready for an exciting educational
experience abroad!
