Programs of Study

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers Master of Science and
Doctor of Philosophy programs in the areas of the mechanics of
materials, materials science, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and
robotics.

M.S. candidates must successfully complete a coordinated sequence of
courses and independent study. Both thesis and nonthesis options are
offered.                            ~~~~~~

Ph.D. candidates must pass a departmental exam (taken after the third
semester of study), pass the Graduate Board Oral exam (usually taken
during the second or third year of full-time study), submit an
original and high-quality doctoral dissertation, and pass the final
                          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
thesis defense. The Ph.D. program normally requires approximately four
~~~~~~~
years of full-time study beyond a bachelor's degree.

Graduate research and course work concentrate on the fundamentals of
fluid mechanics, heat transfer, robotics, and mechanics and materials.
Typically, graduate programs involve core courses in the Department of
Mechanical Engineering and courses in related fields, such as
mathematics, materials science, chemical engineering, civil engineering,
environmental engineering, earth sciences, electrical engineering,
computer science, physics, and chemistry
