Answer by Jennifer S., Nov 1, 1999: If you are applying to a SPECIALIZED PRO
GRAM OF STUDY (for example, Mathematics or History) at any university in the
United States, a committee of faculty members employed by that department w
ill assess your application. There is no single crucial person: in general,
the committee decides based on your personal essays, letters of recommendati
on, and GPA/test scores whether you have the ability to succeed in the progr
am and eventually make a significant contribution to the field of study.
For LESS SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS, such as the MBA, the process is much less per
sonalized: often based closely on your test scores, GPA, and personal essays
defining your broader goals. In this case, actual professors may not decide
on who is admitted; this decision is made by a staff of professionals who f
ollow the department's guidelines closely, aiming for a structured yet diver
se student body.
