One thing you have to bear in mind is that the shorter you personal statemen
t is, the better it will be, for professors are usually too busy to read, ev
en skim a long, tedious one! As a common rule, the length of it is preferabl
y no longer than ONE page with the 11th font.
OK, that's for the personal statement. Then, let's move onto your resume. As
 you may know, for applying for British universities, you should name your p
ersonal statement as covering letter and resume as Curriculum Vitae (CV), th
e following is the different names between American and British.

However, as for applying for an academic position, it is better to write a r
esearch proposal together with your CV (resume). The research proposal consi
sts of all parts in the covering letter (personal statement), but changes yo
ur future plan into your research scheme. 
Anyway, as for CV (resume), you need to list the following things.
1. Personal information: name, gender, date of birth, nationality, correspon
dence address, telephone number(s), e-mail, and a scanned photo (if any);
2. Work experience (both academic and industrial), in every experience, you 
need to show the professor: name of the organisation, your position, working
 period, your main responsibilities, technical achievements (a bit detail), 
what you have learned from it (a bit detail)
3. Education: listing them from the most recent one, in every educational ex
perience, you need to list: name of the institution, degree you were entitle
d (or to be entitled), period, main courses (normally, 4-5 will be sufficien
t).
4. Your specialities: knowledge and skills you have, computer things (do not
 write such things like OFFCIE or Photoshop, everybody knows them, they are 
children's toys!)
5. Professional Qualification (if any), your membership in some professional
 bodies, your OUTSTANDING rewards (do not write People's Rewards, Triple-exc
ellent Student etc. They are useless!)
6. Others: for example, your hobbies, personal interests, linguistic skills,
 etc.
7. Referees: for each referee: name (including educational and professional)
, relation with you, title in organisation, address, telephone number, e-mai
l.
8. Appendix: mainly your publications.
Something important to remember. First, you do not need to draw any frames, 
tables or lines on paper of your CV, just use space to separate each section
, because it looks simple and tidy! Second, do not use any italics unless pa
rticularly necessary. Finally, shorter is better!
