Interview Questions
1. Why are you interested in ***University?
I understand your university has a highly qualified faculty, ample resources,
and an especially broad and active program in the research and graduate study
of ×××. I believe this would be the best place for me to pursue an
individualized plan of study. A particularly exciting part of your project
appears to fit me well. I think I can count on your help while I seek to scale
higher intellectual heights and take up greater challenges.
2. Please introduce yourself.
I was born in a small and impoverished village in the south of China. My
bachelor Degree was got in ××× Department of Harbin Institute of Technology
in July 2000. My major is ××××. Now I am pursuing my master degree in ×
××× Science at HIT.
3. Why pursue phd?
Over the next decade, engineering students graduating with Ph.D. degrees in
×× are needed to join universities as promising faculty members, work in
national laboratories as young researchers, or serve industry as leaders and
managers. And I love the research work related to the ××× field. Just said
as my personal statement, the dream of being a ××× Scientist has long been
incipient. And now, I just do my best to turn this dream into reality.
4. Why are you going to USA not staying your homeland to study?
I have a solid plan for my study. Within that plan I am looking for advanced
education and more room for growth. As I know, U.S. University has the most
advanced training that will benefit my growth greatly.
To tell you the truth, I am not satisfied with what I have done because of
the limitation of the research work and condition. In the United States, there
are a lot of information available, a great many best-in-class research
facilities to choose from and some world-renowned experts to work with. It is
an ideal place for aspiring materials scientists to keep current with the
latest technologies.
I have been passed over for promotions when I know I am capable of doing more.
I want to seek advanced training in the U.S. University that will benefit
my growth greatly.
5. Why do you choose materials science as your major?
It is now well accepted that materials are crucial to national defense, the
quality of life, and the economic security and competitiveness of the nation.
As a result, needs and opportunities for highly trained materials scientists
are dramatically increasing. Everything I've seen and heard makes me want
to be a part of this promising area.
6. What are you looking for in a position?
I'm looking for an opportunity to apply my skills and contribute to the project
while helping create some advancement opportunities for myself/getting more
knowledge and hand-on experience in ×××.
7. What are your long-term objectives?
I'll try to finished my PhD degree in a good reputed school in five years. And
then, I will seek a postdoctoral work in US for about 2 or 3 years to put
some of idea into realities, that is to say, to do some work. After that, I'll
come back to China, to fulfill my long-term dream of being a ××× Scientist
and a researcher in a famous Chinese university and dedicate myself to
applying research achievements into real-life work
Long term, I hope to start my own research in a university of China and build
my career with a company.
After PhD graduation, I will seek a postdoctoral work in a prestigious insti
tution, try to put some ideas into reality, to put some scientific theories
into practical issues. After that, I will go back China and fulfill my
long-term goal of being a ××× scientist and researcher in a famous Chinese
University
8. What are your short-term objectives?
Short-term, I'd like to find a university that is a good fit and where I can
pursue an individualized plan of study and get more knowledge and experience
in engineering. The projects we are here to discuss today would appear to
be such an opportunity. Could you tell me more about it?
9. Where do you see yourself in five years?
This is a very volatile market. I find it difficult to project out five years.
I would like to take a position with some responsibility and room for growth.
10. Why this project is suitable for you?
I've participated in several projects like this one, and that experience will
help me in this/your project.
Our discussion here leads me to believe this is a good place to work/an exci
ting project to focus on. It appears to be fit for my study goals.
11. Do u think you could do the project different from your present program
well?
Though different positions require different types of people with the
fundamental knowledge of the position. But the ability to learn new things is more
important. Also of importance is one's attitude and ability to "fit in". And
I have participated in several different projects and fulfill them
wonderfully. I believe I can do a different program well.
12. Which ability is more important?
Independent and cooperative. I find it important for everyone to be able to
operate on their own and think on their feet as this is often the environment
they would have to work in. Then cooperative ability is also a crucial
element for succeeding in our modern society, due to things become more and more
difficult and complicated. Of course creativity and imagination are also very
important for leading the research to success.
13. What do you think it's the important thing in Engineering?
Seriousness. Engineering takes advantage of the theory and turn the design into
reality, after the plant is finished, you have no chance to do it again.
If something goes wrong when the plant is running for you ignorance, maybe
it will cost not only the money but also the blood.
14. What are your strengths?
I am good at working independently and creatively. At the same time, I am ve
ry proud of my analytical abilities and problem solving skills.
I am good at giving constructive criticism to my coworkers. This honesty is
something I'm very proud of and have found essential to having open working
relationships.
I consider myself to be very consistent. I have proven myself to be someone
who can be counted upon to do what is expected.
I would have to choose between two skills. I am very proud of my determination
and ability to get things done. At the same time, I am very proud of my a
nalytical abilities and problem solving skills. These skills co ability to
solve problems and then implement the solutions.
15. How do you define success?
Realize my own value and benefit not only my own country but also all of
mankind.
16. Did you use any English textbook in classes?
Mechanics of Materials, Engineering Mechanics, Physics, Person to person
17. How about your ability to be a teaching assistant?
It's no problem if use Chinese, but I need some practice in English.
18. Which other universities did u apply?
19. Which courses would you like to take after you come here?
20. Will you like to study in a small but with high quality university or a
big university like Harvard or Princeton?
In my opinion, whether I could meet my goals and take advantage of
opportunities to learn is more important. To get experience and room for growth is much
more important than to be in a big university, as far as I am concerned.
21. Do you have any special or excellent idea during your research experience?
22. There is much difference between Chinese and American Education System,
how do you deal with it? And what did you prepare for our university?
Mingling with people in the Commons, make more and more friends, adjust to
American cultures better and better, and seize the optimum educational
opportunity to develop myself in full scale.
23. Which optimization method did you learn?
Newton method, and some others I do not know how to pronounce. (I don't know
how to describe it in English because all I learn is in Chinese.)
24. Which approaches to composite manufacture did you know?
25. If we give you financial aid, could you come?
Yes, I want to (I do want to be your student.). But you know, I cannot go
without full financial aid.
26. Introduce your university and your department
HIT is one of the Top 9 Key Universities of China, particularly well known for
its excellent ××× major. (×××Science ranks top 3 in China).
27. Introduce your city
28. What will you do in American?
Of course, I will study hard and try to get some achievements in my field and
gain more hand-on experience.
29. Which course do you like most? why?
Materials Structure design. In this course, what I have learned has a closer
relation to our life. During the class, the four professors not only give a
lecture about the theory of design, but they also illustrate the real case
to the students. This makes me master it well.
30. According to your materials, you have do some work in the student Union,
what do you think you have get from it?
Inside the society, it made me to know how to manage a team and how to organize
the student activities. I have developed an entrenched team spirits and
person ability. I am an optimistic man, and I like to communicate with many
different kinds of people.
31. Do you think you are the outstanding student in China? Why?
Yeah, to speak frankly, as you know, before the Chinese students get into the
university, they should take the National Entrance Examination first, which
is highly competitive and I am admitted by HIT, this is a famous engineering
school in China. It's among the top 5 in Engineering. Furthermore, Shortly
after entering HIT, I was selected to participate in a program for talented
students called Experimental College after extremely stiff competition -——
screening nearly 2,500 freshmen for the top 100.
32. What are your parent's jobs?
33. Will you do some part time job during your study in USA?
If I have enough money to keep on my study and living, I want to donate my time
into study and research. But if in the summer vacation, I also want to get
a part time job. That is a chance to communicate with American and taste
the life well.
