Dear all applicants,
Thank you all for applying for our graduate program. This year, we have
received over 100 applications around the world. After a careful review
of all applications, we have selected 20 candidates for interview in
Shenzhen on March 29. Congratulations for making yourself into this
short list if you receive this email!
Some of the candidates have asked some questions regarding this
interview, I would like to take this chance to briefly answer these
questions, and, at the same time, offer you some further information.
1. The interview consists of two parts. The first part is an official
interview by the graduate panel of our department which consists of
three members including Prof. H-S Liao, Prof. J. Wang, and Prof. J.
Huang (myself). Each candidate will be allocated 20 minutes.
The second part is an unofficial meeting between the candidates and
some
of professors in our department. Professors who are not in the graduate
panel can use this chance to meet candidates they are interested in,
and, on the other hand, those candidates who are specifically
interested
in some professors can request to meet them using this chance. In this
case you are responsible to contact these professors directly. Ms Wong
will help you find a time slot.
2. At this moment, it is uncertain that how many of you will actually
be
accepted. However, judging from our experience of previous years, about
half of interviewees may be accepted.
3. It is not absolutely necessary for you to participate in the
interview in person. Other form of interviews such as telephone
interview is also allowed in principle. However, by attending the
interview in person, you are not only giving yourself a chance to
demonstrate your sincerity and enthusiasm about our program, but also
a chance to present your capability and qualifications. As you know,
you have about 50% chance to get admitted. Therefore, you should be
able
to assess the significance of attending the interview personally.
4. The 20 minutes interview will be conducted in English.
It will start by a self introduction of the candidates for about three
minutes, and be followed by questions from three members of the
graduate
panel. These questions are aimed for us to know better your academic
background, motivation, preference, career goal, interest,
communication
skills, and anything that is not easy to be ascertained from your
application materials. No examination of any form will be taken. But it
goes without saying that the interview itself is a chance for you to
show your English proficiency.
5. The format and contents of the unofficial meeting between you and
the
professors are decided by mutual agreement. It is important to know
that individual professors has a great deal of freedom to use their own
research grants or other means to support the potential candidates.
Therefore it is advisable for you take action to contact some
professors
and make sure at least one professor is interested in you.
