Dear Mr. Ma,                                                                  
         
 
I am pleased to offer you an appointment as a half-time Graduate Assistant in 
the Department of Physics of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with com
pensation of $ 9,223 for the academic year 2006/2007, payable in biweekly inst
allments.  Your appointment, which is conditional upon an approved I-9 ("Emplo
yment Eligibility Verification Form"), and full time registration (6 credits o
r more), will start on August 23, 2006 and will run through May 22, 2007.  You
 will be expected to attend to your duties 10 hours per week. 
 
Additionally, we are offering you further support of $ 9,224, so that your tot
al payment will be $ 18,447        for the nine-month academic year.  Specific
ally for the fall semester of 2006, this support will be in the form of a Pred
octoral Fellowship.  For the spring semester of 2007 it will be some combinati
on of Predoctoral Fellowship and Graduate Assistantship support. 
 
Your supervising faculty member is Professor Niloy Dutta, who will arrange you
r schedule with you.  Your duties as a Graduate Assistant involve teaching and
 service duties of approximately 10 hours per week, and will include instructi
onal contact hours, presentation time, and time reserved for various other ass
igned duties.  This appointment may be renewable in future years, for up to fi
ve years for a Ph.D. candidate, subject to the continued availability of funds
, departmental needs, satisfactory progress in your degree program and satisfa
ctory performance in teaching and research duties.  We see this appointment as
 a complement to your progress toward the Ph.D. degree.
 
Your appointment carries a full tuition waiver.  To receive the full value of 
this waiver, you must begin your assistantship duties within ten working days 
of the start of your appointment.  If your arrival on campus is delayed beyond
 that date for some reason, there will be a pro-rated decrease in the amount o
f the tuition waiver.  The University will provide an opportunity for you to p
urchase highly subsidized health insurance within 30 days of your hire date, i
