HIGHER DEGREE WITH/WITHOUT RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANTS
1. Enclosed are:-
(a) Terms & Conditions for the award of the Research Scholarships (Form 75A/
2001)
(b) Application form for admission as a higher degree candidate with/without
Research Scholarship
(c) Transcript Request Form
(d) Form for Referee's Report (2 copies)
(e) Acknowledgement card/form
An official transcript of academic records is required from each university
attended. You are responsible for requesting your transcript from the unive
rsity concerned. Please use the attached transcript request form for this p
urpose. If you have attended more than one university, you should make phot
ocopies of the transcript request form as required.
2. Transcripts must be sent DIRECT by university and all other supporting do
cuments must be CERTIFIED copies. Graduates from this University can submit
certified copies of the official transcripts of their academic records with
their applications. For foreign graduates, if you wish to submit your transc
ript together with your application form, the official transcript must be en
closed in a SEALED envelope with its flap bearing the security seal of the u
niversity and the signature of the Registrar or his representative.
3 The application form must be completed in English; and the supporting docu
ments, if not in English, must be accompanied by copies of the English trans
lation of the documents.
4. Recommendations from 2 academic referees are to be submitted by using the
attached referee's report forms. If you wish to submit the referee reports
together with your application form, each referee report must be in a SEALED
envelope sent by the referee. Alternatively, the referees can send their r
eports DIRECT to the Department concerned.
5. The medium of instruction is mainly English. Applicants for research pro
grammes whose native tongue or medium of undergraduate instruction is not En
glish should submit TOEFL/IELTS scores as evidence of their proficiency in t
he English Language. The minimum TOEFL score ranges from 580 - 600 (equival
ent to computer-based score of 237 - 250) while for IELTS, the score should
be 6 and above. Applicants are encouraged to take the TSE (Test of Spoken E
nglish) and TWE (Test of Written English).
Applicants applying for admission to the Faculties (Engineering, Medicine an
d Science), the School of Computing and the School of Design & Environment m
ust submit GRE score (minimum score ranges from 1800 - 2000) while those app
lying to the Faculty of Business Administration must submit either GRE score
(above 2000) or GMAT score (above 640).
Applicants can either:-
(i) submit TOEFL/GRE/GMAT scoresheets certified by their universities with
an original stamp; or
(ii) request the NUS Department to certify their scoresheets if they are in
Singapore; or
(iii) request ETS to send the scoresheets direct to the Graduate Division of
the relevant Faculty.
When requesting the ETS to send the TOEFL/GRE scoresheets to our University,
please note the following:
For TOEFL, applicants are to quote the following institution code(s) accordi
ng to the NUS faculty that they are interested to apply to:

For GRE, applicants are to quote our University's code (0677) and the specif
ic code of the Department (Department codes can be obtained from ETS) that t
hey are interested to apply to.
6. The acknowledgement form, with your name and address clearly printed or
typed, should be returned with the completed application form.
7. Please submit the completed form together with all the supporting docume
nts to the Graduate Division of the relevant Faculty (please refer to para 1
3 for the contacts). Please arrange the application documents in the follow
ing order:-
(a) Application Form
(b) Listing of Publication(s)
(c) Graduation Certificate/Diploma of Bachelor's degree
(d) Official Transcripts of Bachelor's degree
(e) Graduation Certificate/Diploma of Master's degree (if applicable)
(f) Official Transcripts of Master's degree (if applicable)
(g) TOEFL/IELTS/GRE/GMAT Scoresheet(s)
(h) 2 Referee Reports
(i) Other supporting documents (photocopies of IC/Passport, membership of o
rganisations etc.)
8. The normal minimum entry qualifications for admission to the master's or
doctoral research programmes are a good relevant bachelor's degree (applican
ts who are NUS graduates should have at least a bachelor's degree with honou
rs at second class level) or master's degree and the ability to pursue resea
rch in the proposed field of advanced study.
9. Applicants who are not residing in Singapore or would like to do their re
search in overseas institutions, must spend a period of residence in Singapo
re for a minimum of 6 months (master's degree) or 1 year (doctoral degree) d
uring their period of candidature. However, candidates who are in receipt o
f the NUS Research Scholarship, must reside in Singapore during the duration
of the scholarship to conduct research/attend courses at the University exc
ept during periods of approved leave.
10. The minimum and maximum period of candidature are as follows:-

Doctoral 2 years 5 years
Research candidates may be admitted as full-time or part-time students. H
owever, foreign students on student pass must pursue their study on a full-t
ime basis. The minimum and maximum periods of candidature for both full- an
d part-time programme are the same.
11. Research Scholarships are awarded by NUS to outstanding graduates for re
search leading to a higher degree at the University. The Scholarships are t
enable for 1 year in the first instance and are renewable annually, subject
to satisfactory progress. The maximum period of award is 2 years for Master'
s candidates and 3 years for Ph.D. candidates.
Each Scholarship carries a monthly stipend of S$1,500 and a full research fe
e subsidy. No travel or other allowances are provided. No bond is required
. Additional stipend of up to S$500 per month is awarded to selected candid
ates in the fields of research under the augmentation scheme sponsored by in
dustry and professional bodies.
Candidates may also get a supplementary top-up (usually between S$500 - S$90
0 per month) under the NUS Research Scholarship Augmentation Scheme, where t
he supervisor(s)/Principal Investigator(s) will provide for the top-up throu
gh research grants supported by the University Research Committee.
Research scholars may also be asked to assist in departmental work for which
they can earn up to S$16,000 (gross) per annum at the current rate of remun
eration. However, please note that the University does not guarantee employ
ment to research scholars upon completion of their candidature.
Please refer to the attached Form 75A/2001 for the Terms and Conditions for
the award of the Research Scholarships.
12 There are two intakes per academic year: one in July and the other in Ja
nuary. Please note that applications must be submitted to the Graduate Divi
sion of the relevant Faculty/School by the deadline stipulated in the follow
ing table:
