FEW subjects can match the research strength of materials technology, where 
eight of the 20 universities assessed in 1996 were considered internationall
y outstanding and all but four finished in the top three categories out of s
even. For teaching quality, only two universities scored less than 20 out of
 24.
Ironically, the only English institution to record top marks for teaching, I
mperial College, was also the only one of the top nine to miss out on a five
-star rating for research. Oxford pips Cambridge to first place in the table
 with average entrygrades close to three As at A level - by far the highest 
for geology.
