The Department of Biochemistry offers a program of coursework, laboratory research and counseling leading to the Ph.D.
degree. This training is designed to prepare students to plan and implement their own research and teaching programs in a wide
variety of professional careers. To ensure a broad background, students take coursework in biochemistry, as well as in the
Departments of Microbiology, Pharmacology, Physiology and Biophysics, or Chemistry. First-year students participate in the
Cellular and Molecular Biology Program ( a unified course program staffed principally by faculty from the Departments of
Biochemistry, Cell Biology, and Microbiology). Each program is individually tailored tot he student's interests and needs by his
or her adviser and graduate committee. Completion of requirements of the Ph.D. degree normally requires five to six years.
