The DeBakey Heart Center is an independent entity within Baylor College of Medicine. It was once the original National
Research and Demonstration Center, funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The Center has maintained its
preeminence in basic cardiovascular research and currently offers a broad-based program in cardiovascular sciences leading to
the Ph.D. degree. The Center also participates in the Medical Scientist Training Program, in which students can earn the
combined M.D./Ph.D. degree.

This is an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental program, involving 39 faculty members from Baylor College of Medicine, Rice

The Graduate Program in Developmental Biology offers a research intensive Ph.D. program that is designed to prepare
students both intellectually and technologically to pursue a rigorous and successful career in biological and/or biomedical
research.

Research Areas:Molecular and genetic approaches to study pattern formation in Dictyostelium discoideum, Drosophila,
C.elegans, mouse, Xenopus and zebrafish. A cross-species approach is favored. The major aspects of study are: neurogenesis,
cancer biology, myogenesis, osteogenesis, epidermal development, limb development, homeobox genes, hematopoietic
development, eye development, cell lineage specification, X-chromosome dosage compensation, and reproductive
development.

The program offers Ph.D. training to students holding a B.S./B.A. or M.D. degree or students in the midst of an M.D. program.
During their first year in the program, most students will complete the majority of their required courses. They will also
participate in a rotation program designed to provide them with experience in the laboratories of several graduate program
