hello newcomers, welcome to UCLA,
I am also a newcomer last year, I hope I can give you some information that
will let you fell at ease before and after you come.
First, please read the survival guide, it is helpful to give you a overview
of the life here. Then here is the info in detail.
1) LA
Los Angeles is a big area. The concept of 'city' is quite different with
that in China. In fact, LA is made of many small cities. LA is really a
county containing many such cities. Each small city, in fact, is as big as
a 'district' in Beijing. Even larger, there is "great LA area".
The city you will be is Westwood. The range you will often be is also it.
UCLA is at Westwood, the west of LA, 5 miles from the sea, and 10 miles
north to the LAX airport. At this part, there are 2 highways, 10 and 405,
10 is west-east and 405 is north-south. So, 405 will take you from airport
to UCLA.
Road:
The n-s streat "westwood" is just from ucla toward south, there are many
shops and theatres. That is the first streat you should be familar when you
arrive. The other 2 main n-s streat is called swattel and sepuveda, just
along 405 free way. If you live at family house (explained later), that is
the road you should familar. More west, the main n-s streets are barriton
and Bundy.
The north border of UCLA is sunset bulevard (e-w), a long streat across the
whole city, area to the north of this street belongs to rich people, you
won't go there. Several e-w streets to the south of UCLA in order are:
le-count, wilshire, santa monica, pico, national.
At the begining, your arrange is around this grid. 5x5 miles.
the four roads as the borders of UCLA are: sunset(n), le-count(s),
galey(w),hilgard(e). (you know 2 of them now, right? the other 2 are small).
Shops:
The shops here are not like china, most of them are chain stores. So you
can find the same name at many places. For everyday iterm, go to thrifty,
it is on westwood, between le-count and wilsure (refer to the grid above)
and save-on, For dressing, go to Ross, (on westwood, between santamonica
and pico), for food grocery, go to Hughs, Vons, (sepulveda- national
crossing) pavilian (near bundy).
The iterm in university store is expensive. The iterms in new China town is
cheap, if you could find some one to ride you there.
There are Malls here, like a department store in china, in fact it is made
of many small shops. the nearest is at the westwood-pico crossing.
There is high level department store here, called Macys, a little
expensive. on le-count.
For electrical aparaturs, go to Circuit city, Best buy, for statioanry, go
to .....?? it is a little far.
Bus:
at first, bus is your friend. from UCLA (bike is not good here, hard and
dangerous), it is convient to take many buses. Bus is divided into several
kinds: Santa monica Blue bus, Culver city Green bus, matropolitan yellow
Bus. The bus station is just a borad on a pole, for blue bus, it is a blue
triangle board, for green and yellow bus, it is square board.
below it, you can find the bus route info and time table.
The ticket on blue bus is 50c, green is 60c, yellow is 135c. pay only
coins, no change. If you need to switch bus with the same kind, ask for a
"transfer" when you pay the fee, then you don't need to pay it anymore.
you can find the route and time sheet on the bus near the front door, take
one.
If you want to go to somewhere far, go to the school communication office
(oposit to engneering 4 building), they will tell you which bus to take.
2) prepare
LA has nice weather, in summer, just T-shirt,and in winter, a thin sweter
is enough. If you want to buy clothes and shoes here, go to Ross, not too
expensive comparing to China. There is no mosquito here. Bring books, here
it is expensive. Nobody here wear suit, but for work interview or party,
you may need one. ah, quilt, yes, you can bring a thin one, but you can
also buy one here with $20 at Pick&save (national-sawtell).
Before you come, prepare you english, you will have an exam, last year,
only 3% pass without the need to take courses. Then quite posible, you need
to take speak test (just same as TSE), 1/5 pass at the first time. If you
fail the written test, it is ok, just take course, but if you fail speak
and want to be a TA, there may be trouble.
Bring Money!!! at least $1300-1500, I will explain why after I introduce
houseing. You can borrow money from OISS.
Housing:
must be prepared, and this is the most difficult part!! You have several
choice: 1, in coop (see survival guide), 2 family housing, share, 3, school
dorm, 4, normal apartment .
School dorm is good, but very expensive. If you have friend here, you can
ask them to find family house or even an apartment, it is not expensive,
$350-400/month and near campus. Coop is the most convient, come and live,
cheap, so many chinese live here. $350 room and board. but you have to
share room with other 2 (this means it is not really cheap!). and you have
to pay 125 member fee. If you choose COOP, they will let you pay the whole
half quarter first, last year, I pay $850+125 at the first day. (remember,
you won't get your salary until 10/1, or even later, and at the beginning
of the quarter, you are posible to pay $380 even if you have tuition
waiver!!! now you understand why I say you need to bring money!!! if you
live in apartment, they will have you pay rent for one month and deposit,
that is near 700-800). Living in COOP, there are many chinese, and you
won't feel lonely. But most of them leave COOP to family house after 0.3-1
year. How to choose housing is up to you.
--try don't come at saturday and sunday, for COOP office is closed, if you
do , try to make researvation before that.
------The days you come---------
before that, contact your department, your prefessor, your friends, try
that somebody will pick you at airport. (some small department do, some
professor will send one of his student to meet you), Althoght you see from
the suvival guide that but bus 6 (green) goes from airport to UCLA. it is
not too practical with 2 big cases.
There is taxi, about $20-30, you can go to UCLA or COOP (if you go to other
place, I assume you have friends arange this for you, and he will pick you
up). Show the driver the address in survival guide. tell him westwood and
UCLA.
Then you can go to the office to pay for a room.
--- I know, this is the most difficult part.
Things you need to do step by step:
ask for a campus map at the office (or download one from net before you
come). have a small rest, if it is not holiday, go to OISS first (Offic of
international student and scholarship) they are very helpful. The address
for OISS is Dashew international center,417 circle drive road. very near
COOP, at the middle-west of the campus.
They will tell you what to do next, and they will arrange some activities
for you, like going to disney or camping... there are many volunteers, and
very helpful. You will feel quite better after there.
If time permits, go to the Bank of America (another choice is UCU), it is
on westwood, near the westwood-le-count crossing, a tall building. You can
open account there. Ask for a 'versatel packet' account, for one checking,
one saving. Save your money there, get your check book.
You will need rest after flying, have a rest. study the map, try to
remember the road you've walked. -- yes, you have to walk for these.
This should be the first or even second day here.
On the second and third day, go to your department, I think you have told
your professor your coming, you should meet him at the due date, but you
still need to go to the depantment's student service office, to ask for the
orientation program if there is, and if you are a TA, ask them about the
info and requirement for it. if you are a RA,ask when you begin to be hired.
then go to the Murphy Hall, the university administration, show them the
documents they need (including I-94 and tax info).
If you have time ,and don't want to rest, you can have a tour around the
campus, with the help of the map. or even, walk on the westwood blvd, try
to find the Thrify and Circuit City and theatres, do some shoping.
if you come far before fall quater, OISS will offer some program for you.
that would be your next days. Among these, include Social Security Card and
California ID card appliction. Go with them, espeically for the second one,
it is far. For the first one, you can go there do it yourself, it is at
the Fedral Building on Wilsire. 20minites' walk, opposit to parking lot
32-- find it in your campus map. Before go there, remember to bring the
letter from OISS as a proof of your employment. AND-- always bring your
passport and I-20, I94, at this stage. You can go there after you open bank
account at Bank of America at the second day.
After the first 2,3 days, you will feel better, both phically and sycholly.
Just take a time go to the math builing, the Ofice of Acdemic Computing
(OAC), to open a email account with XXX@ucla.edu. Then you can use the
computer room at COOP or Family House to go online.
Now you can visit the school facilties, the library, the gym, the swimming
pool, they are free.
You need 3-4 days for all these things, to be familiar with these all. try
to ask others and get help. it will be ok. then you can go to the beach
with bus 2, and 3rd street, you can do shoping. and don't forget the
programs from OISS like english conversation, etc.
You may need to install a telephone, you can do this at the first week
after you get your social security number, buy a telephone and plug to the
wall, dial 583 or 0, wait for somebody to talk to you. they may ask you to
go to Santa Monica Mall, GTE Mart to verify your passport (for you are new
here). just go there, I don't need to tell you how now, since you have been
here for one week!
The orientation week.
