This is to those people who got offer from the ECE Dept. at UCSD.  The 
communication theory at UCSD is very strong.  Almost all the professors are
IEEE fellows. Ever heard of Verterbi coding? He was faculty at UCSD, and now
the cofounder of Qualcomm(the commpany who gave standard to CDMA IS-95 and is
the largest company in San Deigo area). Most 
of the profs work in the area of wireless communications which is the hottest
filed in communications.  The communication theory group here should be in the 
top 5 in the US.(what you saw on the ranking like US News is the overall and 
is about 4 years lag behinde the real situtation.
However if your offer is from optics and applied physics, better reconsider
it, if you have other options.  In most cases, you will have to work really
really hard.
