For many years, Pittsburgh was the hub of this country's industrialized growth:

 Steel mills and smokestacks dotted the landscape. Most of these are now gone -
today's metropolitan Pittsburgh is the center of new growth. What was once a 
heavily industrialized town has turned into a diverse corporate, medical, 
financial and educational center.

Pittsburgh has received many awards and recognitions for its accomplishments. 
It belongs to the "Most Livable City Club," being the ONLY city to place among
the top five communities in the three editions of the Places Rated Almanac. 
Factored into these rankings are the city's low housing costs, strong cultural
community, stable neighborhoods, diversified economy, moderate climate, low 
crime rate, and strong educational and medical communities. 

Pittsburgh ranks high on other lists as well: 

Third-best city for doing business (Fortune) 
Fifth-largest corporate headquarters (Fortune) 
Sixth-best city for raising children (Savvy) 
Fifth-best housing market (U.S. News & World Report) 
Second-best city for working mothers (Working Mother) 

And, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, it's cheaper to live in 
Pittsburgh than in Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Miami or Dallas. 
Pittsburgh also ranks among the best cities in the nation for safety. 
Pittsburgh is three times safer than cities of similar size, such as Baltimore,
 St. Louis, Memphis and Cincinnati, and the crime rate in Pittsburgh is less 
than half the national average.
