I received a email from a student there. Hoping it useful for other Cornellers.
good to know that you're coming to cornell this fall. as housing is
concerned, you either live on campus or off campus. first of all, if you
don't want to spend too much on housing, we can rule out one-bedroom
apartment 'cause it is too expensive. i think it should be well above $600
to live in a decent 1-bedroom apartment. that means to bring your housing
expenses down, you have to share an apartment with 2 or 3, or even more
bedrooms with other people, either on campus or off campus.
basically you have only two choices in housing on campus: mapplewood or
hasbrouck. mapplewood is a good choice for first-year single student. it's
about 15-minute walk from our dept. the apartments in mapplewood are all
4-bedroom, you have to share an apartment with other roommates. the good
thing about mapplewood is that what you need to do is just fill out the
application form, then they take care of everything. you don't need to
bother to find a roommate by yourself, which is not so easy for a new
coming student. and that's why most residents in mapplewood are first-year
students. most of students of my class who live on campus chose mapplewood.
if you really want to live close to other first-year students, maybe you
want to consider mapplewood. but to me, the bedrooms there are way too
small compared to the money you're paying, which i guess is $400+. the
other on campus choice is hasbrouck. they've got 2-bedroom apartments
there, and those are relatively cheaper than mapplewood's. but you have to
find a roommate by yourself. but you have to be very lucky to find a
roommate shortly after you arrive here. it's about 25-30 minute walk from
our dept, and the bus service commuting from hasbrouck to campus is always
on time and frequent.
@
you got a whole lot more choices in off-campus housing. there are much more
choices in prices and locations. but you still have to share with other
people if you want to go cheap. the rent range is about 200-400, depending
on the qualitclose to other econ ph.d student are pretty small.
so, if you don't think $400+ is too much, and you do like the convenience
of living on-campus and being close to other classmates, mapplewood is the
choice. i suggest hasbrouck if you'd like to pay 350-400 to share an
2-bedroom. if you want to go even cheaper, i guess you have to live with
more people in a bigger apartment or a less decent one.
