Welcome to Stanford!
Actually choosing houses is not a so huge task for you new students: you are
guaranteed housing if you choose the final "Accept any available housing"
choice. If in lottery you have to live with foreign or unfamiliar roommates,
firstly it is not a nightmare since most stanford students are kind, secondly
you can always make petition to change roommate, and such petitions are often
satisfied. I have lived with two foreign roommates for a year, not so bad :)
(By the way, only about 5% students here is black, most are asian students or
white whom shall not be very uneasy to live with, hehe.)
Overview: Most (~70%) Chinese students live in Escondido Village and about
20% Chinese students live in Crothers/Crothers Memorial. Other students live
in Lyman or Rains. Lyman, at southwest of campus, is far from most students
in Escondido/Rains which is at east of campus, but Lyman is near to most
science departments. Crothers is at the center of school, it has almost no
kitchen and its bathroom is common. But its housing rent is extremely cheap.
Chinese students there can eat Chinese Bian4 Dang1 (about $12/day or less),
or Xi1 Chan1. If live in Escondido Village, it takes usually a 10-15 min bike
ride to most departments, or if you are lazy, you can take free campus buses.
For Lyman, about a 6-10 min bike ride, and for Crothers, you can walk to your
office. On campus, almost all of us use bicycles to go around the beautiful
campus, driving is only necessary in weekends' visits to chinatown.
You needn't consider the Co-ops or Schwab, or one-person studios. These
choices definitely do NOT fit you. As you new students are guaranteed housing,
I think you can choose just a few choices you prefer, and by choosing the
"Accept any housing available" choice, you are guaranteed housing. That is,
you need not list all choices, just a few choices you prefer are enough.
Now I will list the possible choices in the order of MY preference
(for your reference only):
A. one bedroom/2 people (Escondido Village only): $4587/year, best choice
in my view: your life quality is nearly the same as 2 bedroom/2 people, while
you can save money. The only shortcoming is that you cannot invite too many
(>3) friends, since space of Ke4 Ting1 is limited. Generally each of you two
live in Ke4 Ting1 for a half year. Unless you wish to make love, privacy of
living in Ke4 Ting1 is not so bad: there are blinds that separate the area
you stay in Ke4 Ting1. However, if you do deem Ke4 Ting1 as an important sign
of good life quality, then you shall choose B or C as first choice.
(I estimate about 40% Chinese students take choice A or similar choice E).
B. two bedroom/2 people (Lyman only): this Lyman's choice is better than
choice C in my view, since Lyman is much closer to most science and eng.
department than Escondido Village. However most of us actually live in
Escondido. Many apply for Lyman but few can get it. Also, most Chinese
students live in Escondido which is too far from Lyman, so if you prefer a
Chinese-style life Lyman is perhaps not a very good choice.
C. two bedroom/2 people (Escondido Village only): $6537/year (Lyman's
rent is same). So Choice B and C are $2000/year expensive than choice A.
But if you do not intend to save money too much, they are good choices: you
can have large Ke4 Ting1 to hold some small parties, or enjoy TV from a far
distance. However, according to my experience, Ke4 Ting1 in most time is
just blank, and looks like waste of space, hehe.
D. three bedroom/3 people (Escondido Village only): $5914/year. The type
of housing I'm living in. If you and your other two roommates all cook
very often, then maybe inconvenience such as waiting for kitchen/bathroom
space will exist. Also the space for storing things is same as C but shared
by one more guy.
E. two bedroom/3 people (Escondido Village only): same price as choice A,
but one more roommate. So this is a choice worse than all choices above.
F. two bedroom/2 people (Rains only): the environment in Rains is not so
good as that in Escondido Village in my view: housing there, seems
Europe-style and crowded, without much glass and trees. Yet the price of
this is same as choice C.
G. four bedroom/4 people (Rains only): 4 people seems too much, I myself
do not like it. But I do know a guy who prefers its "family-style" life.
H. Crothers/Crothers Memorial: one bedroom/2 people or one bedroom/
1 people. A very very money saving option, but the life-style is like dorm
in China: you have to use public bathroom/WC. Only several of guys living
there have kitchen. But of course, such dorm is much better than Chinese
dorm: the space for 2 people's bedroom in crothers would carry 6 people in
China. For one bedroom/2 people at Crothers, remember that instead of
choice A, you will live with your roommate in the SAME room (fortunately
not shang4 xia4 pu4 yet:). How you feel about snore roommates in China? :)
Consider it before you choose. One bedroom/1 people is better.
Information about application in group:
Group is not assigned to. You form the group. That is, if you'd like to
live with another Chinese student, you set up the group name and a group
password. By forming a group with him/her, the chance you live together is
enhanced very much, but NOT guaranteed. There is always last-minute
possibility that the school finally has to separate you, and refuses
petition of rearrangement. But anyway you are guaranteed to have on-campus
housing. And, always remember that, according to my and other's experience,
living with foreign roommates, if has to, is not a nightmare. Do not expect
that your roommate can improve your english very much, however. Everybody
has a bedroom, and my foreign roommates almost have no effect on my life.
Important note!: After the lottery, as indicated on your handbook, in
about June you will have the choice of accepting the result or asking for
reassignment. Remember that, if you apply in group and both of you have
already got the same result, then if any of you asks for reassignment, it
is very likely that you two will be separated: reassignment does not
consider groups.
Note about early arrival: you have the choice of arriving one week earlier
than the Autumn quater begins, but you need to pay the one-week rent of
about $120. I strongly suggest you arrive about one week earlier: when the
autumn quater begins you will be very busy.
Autumn quater begins on Sep.25, Mon. Early-housing begins on Sep.18, Mon.
If you arrive earlier than Sep.18, however, you need to find temporary
housing to kill the weekend off. I find it not necessary to arrive earlier
than Sep.18 unless for academic reason: one week shall be enough.
Be sure to enjoy nice Stanford on-campus housing for graduates. NEVER ever
consider living off-campus, housing rent at silicon valley is too high.
And everyone here enjoys the beautiful stanford campus and its free various
gyms and sports facilities.

my personal view, NOT the stanford official rule for housing)
(FYI: you can contact dcchu@stanford.edu for further questions, he is the
chairman of chinese students here, a very nice warm-hearted man, but BE
SURE TO BE THANKFUL to him, and contact him only if you really need help,
for I know he is also very busy in academic stuff. Also, if you're physics
or applied physics students, be sure to contact me :)
