The Department of the History of Science, Medicine and Technology was created in 1993 through the merger of two existing University divisions: the Department of the History of Science and the Institute of the History of Medicine, each with a long
history of graduate training and historical study. The combined Department brings together faculty and students whose interests range from the cultural and intellectual history of medicine in classical Greece to the social history of electronics in the
twentieth century. All share a commitment to studying science, medicine and technology in their historical context: in relation to the ideas, institutions and practices of specific times and places
