The program in Colloids, Polymers and Surfaces (CPS) is an interdisciplinary effort to fill an educational gap. More than fifty percent of all chemical products produced in the United States call for application of principles of colloid, polymer or
surface science in their production and/or utilization. The Master of Science degree in Colloids, Polymers and Surfaces is offered jointly by Carnegie Institute of Technology and Mellon College of Science. Participating faculty are drawn mainly from
the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Chemistry. It is also possible to earn a combined degree in Colloids, Polymers and Surfaces and either Chemical Engineering or Chemistry.

The Biomedical Engineering Program operates on the theory that it is important for bioengineers to be outstanding in engineering, so that their full talents can be incorporated in an interdisciplinary research effort. The knowledge of biological
phenomena allows students to recognize relevant biomedical problems. Whether it is a team or individual research effort, bioengineers must be prepared to utilize their skills in seeking a solution.

As research has progressed in robotics, the educational needs of students in robotics have become more clearly defined. Carnegie Mellon established the pioneering Robotics Ph.D. Program to provide for these needs. In the program, Institute faculty have
combined with faculty from across the university to define a curriculum for the study of robotics.

The M.D./Ph.D. Program of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University was established in 1983 to offer exceptionally talented individuals the opportunity to undertake a physician-scientist training program tailored to their specific
research interests. Through this program, students who have a clearly defined interest in specialized medical research can combine the curriculum of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine with any number of graduate programs in basic sciences
or engineering at either the University of Pittsburgh or Carnegie Mellon University. Over a period of six or seven years, these individuals meet the degree requirements of both a graduate school and the medical school, thus acquiring the knowledge,
skills, are adjacent to one another in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
Degrees Offered:
M.D./Ph.D.
