Areas of training include organic synthesis, organic reaction mechanisms, enzyme structure and function, molecular recognition, and structure determination of peptides and nucleic acids by X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy,
enzyme mechanisms, the design of inhibitors and mechanism-based inactivators, and the synthesis of natural products. Applicants are expected to have strong backgrounds in physical or biological science, with undergraduate concentrations in chemistry,
biochemistry, biology, or pharmacology.

The joint master's degree in women's studies and another discipline has two options. One option is for graduate students who are currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in American history, anthropology, comparative history, English and American
literature, the Heller School, the Interdisciplinary Program in Literary Studies, music, Near Eastern and Judaic studies, psychology, or sociology. These students may elect a joint master's degree in women's studies and their program, with their
advisor's permission as well as the agreement of the Women's Studies Program. The second option, for students not enrolled in the Ph.D. programs described above, is a terminal joint master's degree in women's studies and anthropology; women's studies
and Near Eastern and Judaic Studies; women's studies and sociology; or women's studies and English and American literature. Except in rare circumstances, this option is available only at the time of admission.

The Heller School offers three degree options that are designed explicitly to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Our Master's Program prepares managers for leadership positions in a range of health and human service, non-profit, public, and

The SID Program considers the state of world development, probes issues that affect future generations, and broadens skills necessary to plan, negotiate, implement, monitor and evaluate development programs. SID examines models of development for their
achievements in reducing poverty and inequality, raising quality of life, and conserving the environment. The program emphasizes public policy analysis, development economics, science for environmental management, and evaluation of actual cases. This
interdisciplinary program is of particular interest to mid-career professionals with responsibility for poverty alleviation, regional development, and environmental management. Successful applicants have come from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the
Middle East and Eastern Europe.
