The quality assessment scale used by the Scottish funding council for 1992/9
3 included the same categories as used by the English funding council - exce
llent, satisfactory and unsatisfactory. But in 1993-94 an extra category of
highly satisfactory was introduced. In both years excellent and unsatisfacto
ry are used in the same way.
HS Highly Satisfactory
From April 1995, a new "profiling" teaching assessment system was introduced
. Each department is assessed against six categories: curriculum design, con
tent and organisation; teaching, learning and assessment; student progressio
n and achievement; student support and guidance; learning resources; and qua
lity assurance and enhancement. In each category a grade on a four-point sca
le was awarded. The bottom grade, 1, means the aims and objectives set by th
e subject provider are not met. Grade 2 means this aspect makes an acceptabl
e contribution to the attainment of the stated objectives, but significant i
mprovement could be made. Grade 3 means this aspect makes a substantial cont
ribution to stated objectives, but there is scope for improvement. Grade 4 m
eans this aspect makes a full contribution to the attainment of the stated o
bjectives. The THES has totalled the scores of the categories for each depar
tment: the best possible score is 24.
