THE social policy ranking is complicated by the fact that, even in England,
universities were assessed for teaching quality under two different systems.
But with an excellent grade for teaching and the only five-star rating for
research, the London School of Economics is a clear winner.
Thirteen universities were considered excellent at teaching, and Warwick sco
red the maximum 24 points under the assessment system, which was introduced
in England in 1995. Sheffield Hallam is the only new university in the top 2
0. Another 16 institutions offering the subject are not included in the tabl
e because they chose to to have their teaching assessed under sociology
