ONLY East Anglia's high entry requirements separated the university from Reading, which shares the distinction of maximum scores for both teaching and research. Although a number of departments were considered excellent for teaching, only two top 
research grades were awarded. 
The subject is one in which the new universities are well represented. Both Plymouth and Hertfordshire make the top ten, while others are held back mainly by their research record.
