The Pharmacological Sciences Training Program (PSTP) was established at Georgetown in 1977. This program provides students with a thorough grounding in the core principles of the pharmacological sciences with particular emphasis in three primary areas:
neuropharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, and cancer pharmacology. This program differs from the traditional Ph.D. program in the Department of Pharmacology in that it equips trainees to use the tools of several disciplines in their work and
enables them to see for themselves how the fundamental principles and techniques of pharmacology can and should be applied to the solutions of problems in many areas. Drawing upon the faculty of numerous basic science and clinical departments, the
Lombardi Cancer Center, and the Institute for Cognitive and Computational Sciences, this multidisciplinary approach ensures that trainees acquire the basic knowledge of their discipline while providing a wide range of advanced courses and laboratory
rotations.
Degrees Offered:
M.D./Ph.D.

This Department provides a full range of research training experiences and graduate courses, offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, and participates in the M.D./Ph.D. and multi-disciplinary programs within the Medical Center. Active research programs in
basic and applied biomedical sciences emphasize the cellular and molecular basis of function, in the context of understanding the integrative mechanisms of physiological processes, and are conducted by a vigorous and productive faculty in
well-equipped, state-of-the-art facilities. A special program leading to a Master's degree has been designed for students interested in the study of medicine who wish to strengthen their application credentials to medical schools or who wish to pursue
basic science studies in a medical school environment.
