The M.S.E. program is structured to develop in the student a much stronger theoretical base for either engineering practice or research. The M.S.E. degree requires successful completion of 10 course units. Typically, M.S. students take four courses per
semester and obtain the M.S.E. degree within three semesters.
The Ph.D. degree program is focused on the development of research skills which will equip the graduate for a life of scholarship in her/his field of interest. The heart of the course of study is the thesis research that culminates in a dissertation
which adds to our store of knowledge in a significant way.

The PhD program in Health Care Systems combines intensive graduate level training in health care systems and health services research with advanced training in a traditional academic discipline. The rationale is that such a combination will be most
conducive to participation in the kind of interdisciplinary research needed for adequate analysis of the health care sector's problems and behavior.

This academic program trains world-class scholars who are well grounded in the disciplines of operations and information management: decision processes, management information systems, operations management, and operations research. Operations and
information management places special emphasis on economic analysis and formal modeling of strategic and operational control problems to be found in the critical processes associated with the design, production and distribution of goods and services.
Theory development as well as critical experimental and field studies suggest new solutions to organizational information and incentive problems in a wide range of problem contexts (e.g. the environment, individual and group decision making, supply
chain management, business reengineering and more efficient and effective computer applications). Normative results can be tested empirically and integrated with the design of innovative decision support systems. Most applications rely on
state-of-the-art information technology and computational methods: for example, computer graphics and communication networks, computer-integrated manufacturing, and genetic algorithms.

The doctoral program in public policy and management focuses on how policies concerning major public issues are formulated, selected, implemented, and evaluated. It provides a foundation for achieving an improved understanding of the relationships
between government and industry, which is critical in an environment in which the government influences virtually all private sector transactions. The program seeks to deepen understanding of these processes, to develop, disseminate, and apply new
tools of analysis to assist decision making

This program has been designed to train graduates to develop and apply modern statistical techniques. The foundation is a sequence of courses in probability, mathematical statistics, statistical computing, and linear models and experimental design. The
program also permits study in a cognate area of application and involvement in consulting and data analysis with investigators from other disciplines. Work on actual problems reinforces the classroom treatment of statistical methods, provides
motivation for developing new statistical techniques, and often is a source of research problems for the doctoral dissertation.
