Thank you for your interest in graduate study in Civil and Environmental
Engineering (CEE) at the University of California, Berkeley.
If you have already taken the general GRE test since October 1997, you
do
not need to take the new version of the General GRE Test. We will accept
the computer-based test or the paper-based test.

Hello Xiao:
Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and TOEFL: All applicants must take the
general test of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). We
do not require the Subject Test or a writing test. Test scores cannot be
older than 5 years old from the date of
expected admission (i.e. 1998 for Fall 2003 admission). The department
code for the GRE is 1603. Additional information
on the GRE can be obtained at: http://www.gre.orgor (609) 771-7670.

The Duke University Graduate School is aware that recent improprieties

occurred in China, Taiwan, and Korea that have resulted in the
computer
based testing (CBT) program for the GRE being suspended in those
countries.
While we will still accept CBT scores from tests taken prior to
October 1,

to
ensure the legitimacy of your scores.

Dear Applicant,
The GRE general exam is a requirement for all applicants. The paper
based
exam is the preferred and acceptable form. However, If you choose not to
take the paper-based exam, that is your choice. Please keep in mind that
the GRE results are included in the total group of pieces in an
application
for which an equation is derived. That equation provides us with a
numbering system for applicants. Having the GRE scores not included in
this equation will most probably put your application in a lower
grouping. While the electronic GRE's you submit may be reviewed, they
will not be included in that equation for our ranking purposes. The
TOEFL
exam is also required for all non-US students whose native language is
not
English.

Yes, we will accept the computer-based GRE score if you cannot retake
the
test. It appears that the problem is confined to the verbal portion of
the
GRE only. Since CEE requires a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (PBT)/250
(CBT)
for admission, we will use that as our basis for determining English
ability, and no exceptions to those scores will be made. And, as always,
our decisions are based on a review of all materials requested with
the
formal application, not just GRE. Please note that this is CEE's
decision
only; other Fields of Study at Cornell may not accept the computer-based
GRE, so all applicants to Cornell should check with the Field they
intend
to apply to for that Field's GRE policy.

Dear Xiao Lu:
In light of the discovery of a recent security breach and the ETS
decision to suspend the CBT test in four Asian
countries, computer-based (CBT) GRE results will no longer be accepted
from the countries of Hong Kong, Taiwan,
China and Korea. Only paper-based tests, conducted after October 1, 2002
will be accepted for this year's admission
season from these countries. CBT
GREs from other countries appear to not be part of the
security breach and will be accepted as usual.
Best Wishes

25)Southern Methodist University
In reference to your question regarding the recent decision by ETS to
change
to the paper based GRE scores as opposed to the Computer Based due to
their
having determined there may have been some cheating going on, please
be
aware of the following.
You may submit the GRE scores you currently have. Should the department,
at
the time they review your application, deem it necessary, they may
request
you retake the GRE.
This is not a new policy. It is not merely due to the decision ETS made,
it
has always been the policy of Southern Methodist University.

Dear Xiao Lu:
You need to contact the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which
administers
and regulates the GRE. If they have invalidated the test, then they
will
not send the scores to a school. If this is the case, then you will have
to
retake the GRE in order to apply to our program. If they have not
invalidated the test, then you should be able to request the scores be
sent
to us.

We have not yet decided on how to handle GRE CBT test scores. In
