Hi,
I got friends who their undergraduate finance degrees from UW-Madison. I
con
tacted them and several other people to get information about the
program. P
eople told me that UW-Madison抯 PhD finance program has been losing
its popu
larity in the job market. I really don抰 know why. Still, in my opinion,
Wis
consin is a very good school. As far as I know, UW-Madison is
particularly s
trong in financial markets and market microstructure. In addition, its
econo
mics department is one of the best departments in the US. You can
consider t
his as a plus if your studies are related to economics.
I have to note one more thing. Many people in this thread tend to
evaluate t
he strength of PhD programs by looking at MBA rankings. This en entirely
wro
ng approach. I do not even agree with the research rankings at the UGA
and I
ndiane web sites. The problem with these rankings is that they rank
the prod
uctivity of the faculty not but they do not rank the way faculty
improves th
e skills of the PhD students. A students performance in a PhD program
comple
tely depends on his own skills, commitment to research and interaction
with
the faculty. Many PhD students I talked to told me that choosing the
right a
dvisor is the most important decision a graduate student should make. It
is
even more important than choosing the university. My brother who got
his PhD
