标 题: how to make a decision?
发信站: 哈工大紫丁香 (Sat Mar 30 14:24:44 2002) , 转信
To those who got several offers and always ask " which university shall I go?"
:-)
(NOTE: the follows are just my personal opinion..they are based on limited exp
erience and resource, thus might be biased. Also, since I am a phd student in
Computer Science, working on networking, the information might make more sense
for CS students who aim at phd degree than others. So please make your decisi
on by your own judgement)
Now the deadline to make a decision is approaching.. many students begin to as
k which offer I shall accept. well.. based on my personal experience, serveral
rule of thumbs are provided as follows:
(0) think about your career future, do you want to work in academia or industr
y.
(1) Q: which univ shall I go?
A: the area you work in and the advisor you work with are the most important.
Unless your offer is from universities like MIT or Berkeley, OTHERWISE, the ar
ea you work in and the advisor you work with are the more important than the u
niversity itself..
So comparing two universities by their "various" ranks, and asking " which one
shall I choose ? A univ with CS rank of 23/ comprehensive rank of 50 or B uni
v with comprehensive rank of 18 / CS rank of 38" does not help in making a cor
rect decision.
Finding a good advisor and working in a promising area you like is the most im
portant. Working in a "dead" area, you will know how hard it is to find a job
after graduation; Working in an area you do not like, you will find phd is not
hing but torture; Working with a prof. that does not care about students, you
will change another advisor and start your research again sooner or later; Wor
king with a prof who is not sensitive i n research, your phd life is pretty mu
ch on your own..
For academia job, your work/publication is the first criteria, then your resea
rch direction, finally, your advisor and the univ you graduated.
for industry job, the area you work in, your own ability and then others.
It is true that good univs have more famous and talented faculties, who may gi
ve you helpful supervision so that you can have good publications. however, go
od faculties can be in "high-rank" univs as well as "low-rank" univs. For exam
pe, in network area,
many profs in UMASS, UCLA, Galtech, TAMU, OSU (well, these two prof.s just tra
nsfered to UIUC :)), are much better than those in Stanford, CMU ..
now the question becomes " How shall I know which prof is a good one?" here is
some tips:
(a) check out his/her homepage, take a look at his/her most recent publication
s, exam the quality and the quantity .:)
Talented faulties have high-quality publications. (by high-quality, I mean in
top conferences and journals. For example SIGCOMM, MOBICOM, INFOCOM in network
area). The timing is also important, some profs who were really productive an
d in a leading role five years ago may no longer that "shine" now. This may be
cause they no longer work in academia ( though their names still listed in the
univ's homepage) or they just wish to enjoy the life after they got the tenur
e. :)
(b) take a look at his/her professional activities. If he/she is chair/program
commitee for top conference or editor for good journal, it means he/she has s
ignificant impact in this area. The fame of your advisor can help in your futu
re career.
(c) take a look at his/her fundings, everyone knows rich boss is good..hehe..
(d) the last but not the least...check his/her recent graduated phd students,
what are they doing now? their current status may be your career future.
(2) Q: TA or RA or fellowship?
(3) Q: Does money matter?
(4) Q: Does location matter?
well..no time le.. continue next time when I am free..:)
