Of course, different Ph.D. programs have different requirements for admissions
and financial aid. Top Ph.D. programs probably do need some research or teach
ing experiences, which often means that you have published research papers or
finished some research projects. But I don't believe papers are absolutely req
uired for admission or financial aid.
For those second or third tier Ph.D. programs, I think the requirements are mu
ch less demanding. So, which ones are you applying?
What Ph.D. programs want from you really is whether you have research and teac
hing potentials. Of course, papers are one of the ways to prove that. But if y
ou don't have them, you can do the following:
(1) Have you involved in any research projects in college? If yes, can those e
xperiences prove to admissions officers that you have research potentials?
(2) Have you involved in any research projects after college? If yes, can the
experiences show your research abilities?
(3) If you don't have the above, do you know what you are going to research on
in the Ph.D. program? If you do and can raise interesting questions in your P
ersonal Statement or Study Plan, it could indicate to professors that you are
INDEED interested in research and that you have STARTED thinking about researc
h issues.
(4) Good GRE scores can mean that you are academically capable.
