1. Tell me about what you have done in the past year.
Recommendation: This is a prime opportunity to bring up positive instances i
n your life because the question is so general. Focus on past experiences in
the last year that are relevant to the job.
2. Describe the duties of your last job.
Recommendation: Focus on the job duties that overlap with the job you are se
eking. This will give the interviewer a clear idea of how your past experien
ce can benefit their company. Further, speak about how well you accomplished
these duties as you describe them.
3. What are your five most significant accomplishments?
Recommendation: Use some of your P-A-R stories. Tailor your selection to the
position under consideration.
4. In what extracurricular activities did you participate while attending sc
hool?
Recommendation: Talk about the extracurricular activities you were involved
in while attending school. Emphasize the activities where you were in charge
of something or led a team to victory.
5. Did you get along with your co-workers at your past job?
Recommendation: Of course you did! Create the impression that you interact w
ell with others even in a stressful working environment.
Behavioral Practice Questions
1. We all tell lies occasionally. Give three examples when you did.
Recommendation: First of all, it is ok to take exception to the notion that
we all lie and to lightly and agreeably contradict your interviewer (your pr
ospective boss). You want to be thought of as someone forthright and honest
with an authority figure. So talk about someone you particularly admire who
you don't believe tells lies. As for you, you hopefully only tell white lies
when it's a social situation and you're making the other person feel better
. I'm afraid not every get-up my teenager wears looks great to me but I tell
her it does, and not every meal my husband cooks is worthy of four stars, b
ut I tell him it is.
2. Describe a time in which your work was criticized.
Recommendation: Give only one and tell how you corrected, or plan to correct
, your work in this instance.
3. Describe an experience where you showed initiative at work.
Recommendation: Choose an experience when you demonstrated both ambition and
drive at work.
4. Give an example where you solved a work-related problem.
Recommendation: Choose a significant and recent experience where you spearhe
aded a solution to a problem, generating measurable results if possible.
5. Describe a time when you helped a fellow co-worker in a difficult situati
on.
Recommendation: Select a situation where you went out of your way to assist
a fellow employee. This will show that you are motivated to help others with
out being asked.
Situational Practice Questions
1. What would you do if your car broke down on the way to work and you were
definitely going to be late?
Recommendation: The best answer would be to immediately call your supervisor
to inform him/her of the situation. If it was crucial that you had to be th
ere as soon as possible, you could take a taxi the rest of the way.
2. What would you do if you saw a fellow employee slacking off on the job?
Recommendation: Talking with the co-worker first would be the best first cou
rse of action. This would include telling the co-worker about your feelings
towards his/her behavior. Specifically, how it makes more work for others. I
f this person persisted to slack off afterward, you could inform your immedi
ate supervisor about the situation.
3. A co-worker has just informed you that she does not like working with you
. Nevertheless, you know that you have to work with this person on a project
for the next month. How would you handle this situation?
Recommendation: Talk with this co-worker to find out what the problem is and
try to work it out. The main idea that you want to get across is that you w
ill put forth full effort to have better relations with this fellow employee
.
4. You are working on a project with three co-workers and an immediate super
visor. The project is due in one week and a lot of work still needs to be do
ne before it's completed. Your immediate supervisor becomes involved in a ca
r accident and will be in the hospital for at least two weeks. This situatio
n worries your workgroup as they feel lost without the supervisor directing
their actions. What would you do in this situation?
Recommendation: Someone has to take leadership in this situation - that some
one is you! Talk about how you would pull the team back together and finish
the project on time.
5. What would you do if a co-worker asked for help on another project when y
ou are already behind on your own project?
Recommendation: Tell that co-worker you would be happy to help him or her bu
t you must make gains on your own project first. After you have made suffici
ent progress on your project, you would help him or her in any capacity need
ed.
