Graduate Application Process Checklist

This checklist provides you with information you may find helpful when apply
ing to graduate schools in general.

?  Meet with your faculty advisor. Discuss opportunities for graduate study 
in your area of interest.

1.  Get referrals to graduate programs and faculty at other institutions.

2.  Find out about opportunities for undergraduate research (directed resear
ch, summer programs, etc.).

?  Study for and take the GRE early. Request a GRE Fee Waiver from your fina
ncial aid office.

?  Start gathering information. Start with the graduate advisor in your majo
r. Request the following information:

1.  The university's general graduate application.
2.  The program's specific application.
3.  Form needed to waive application fee (or procedure for doing so).
4.  Form needed to waive out-of-state tuition (if needed).
5.  Listing of faculty and current research interests.
6.  Fellowship information and applications in the department, school and un
iversity level.
7.  Name and telephone number of person responsible for minority student rec
ruitment at the department.

?  Ask the Graduate Advisor questions about the program. The following are a
 sample:

1.  How many students apply to the program each year?
2.  How many students are admitted each year?
3.  How many students graduate each year?
4.  How many students of color are in the program?
5.  How many minority faculty are in the program?
6.  What percentage of students are funded?
7.  Are there travel funds available for applicants considering this program
8.  How much weight is given to each of the various elements which make up y
our application?
9.  What is the process by which applicants are evaluated and selected for a
dmission?
10.  Is a GRE General Test and/or a Subject Test required for admission?

Do this for each program you are interested in applying to:

? Review the information and identify the top five to ten graduate programs 
you want to apply to and faculty at those institutions you would like to wor
k with. At least two should be above your expectation for admission. Also ap
ply to two schools that you are relatively certain to be accepted at as a sa
fety net.

? Meet with your Faculty Advisor again. Discuss your choices and ask for an 
honest evaluation of those choices. Ask if they know anyone in those program
s or if there are any current graduate students or faculty who came from one
 of those programs. Talk with those individuals about the program. Try to ge
t a feel for the culture of the institution and the program.

? Request transcripts from all the institutions you have already attended fo
r each school you plan to apply to. Request an extra copy for your records. 
Have the transcripts sent you, but do not open them so they remain official.
 Send a photocopy of your transcripts along with your application.

? Request letters of recommendation from faculty. Request at least one extra
 letter as a back-up. Give faculty the date you want to submit your applicat
ion as the due date of the letter. Do not wait until the official deadline.
? Draft your statement of purpose. Tailor each statement to the program you 
are applying to.

? Fill out application forms for fellowships at the same time you complete y
our application for admission. Most fellowship deadlines are in November thr
ough January. Funding process happens concurrently with admission.

? Mail in application well in advance of the official deadline. Send a dupli
cate application directly to the program you are applying to if the original
 is sent elsewhere. Keep a copy for your own records.

? Contact each program to make sure all of the documents for your applicatio
n were received. Keep a written log of whom you talk to, the date, the infor
mation they gave you, and any action you need to take.
