To ape, doublesky and all applicants. wish you guys good luck! :)
My advisor is asked to talk about the admission procedures during today's part
y.
She has been serving in the admission commitee in CS dept of UIUC for 3 years.
So some of the information below may be useful.
About 1000 applications will be received each year (take Fall application as a
n example).
First, the applications are filtered by graduate program director. Those appli
cations with GPA<3.2 and GRE<2000 will be screened. so only about 600 will be
left.
Next, they will be sorted according to applicant's country.
There will be a "quota" for each country each year, and the quota is predeterm
ined before the applcation decision starts. For example, this year more "quota
" will be saved for U.S. applicants.
Then, the admission committee (about 10 members, 8 faculties and 2 graduate st
udents) will meet each Sat. to make admission decisions for each country.
The top factors in consideration for Chinese students are: (1) which univ are
you from?(tsinghua and peking univ have priorities); (2) your GPA and GRE. If you are
from non-tsinghua/peking univ, you need to have much higher GPA to be consider
ed; (3) research background, especially for students with MS degree. it will b
e highly evaluated; (4) personal statement, They will definitely read it!!
my advisor said, statements starting with " when I was a little child, I like
computers..I run my first BASIC program, when I was 3..." will definitely be r
ejected. and she also told us, we can not image how many person statements lik
e this they read every year.. the personal statement needs to specify your res
earch interest;(5) recommendation letters. they know that the letters are most
ly not written by profs. they just sign it....but if three letters are written
in the same style, the application will be thrown into rejection pile, becaus
e they are regarded as cheating..( of course, the chinese students in our grou
p told my advisor that, the prof.s do not write recommendation letters because
they do not have time, and they can not express their feeling well in English
. and they do read the letter carefully and give comment before they sign it..
)
Finally, after admission is decided, the graduate program director will send e
-mails to profs., if the admission material indicates the interest in working
with these profs. so that profs can decide whether to sponsor RA..
For the TAship and further assistantship desision, my advisor does not talk ab
out it..
Also, the profs who are originally from China(well, we do not have) or Taiwan/
Hong Kong(we have some) will help to evaluate the applications from China. Esp
ecially, how good the applicant's university is, because they have a better id
ea about the education and research system in China.
Corretion of some wrong ideas we may have for UIUC admission:
(1)GRE sub is actually not heavily considered in admission;
(2)TSE is not considered in admission, since many students do not provide it..
but I do not know whether it is considered in assistantship decision.
