The following short article is the instruction for writing a research
proposal suggested by the deaprtment of information studies of the
University of Sheffield, U. K. Please take a look for reference.
How to put together a Research Proposal
The research proposal is an important document in that it is used to judge t
he acceptability of your proposed research to the Department, to identify a
potential supervisor, and if acceptable to the Department, to support your a
pplication when it is forwarded to Faculty Committees or other appropriate b
odies for consideration.
The proposal should be typed, be about 1,500-2,000 words in length for a PhD
proposal, but less for a Masters' proposal, and incorporate the following i
nformation:
Title of proposed thesis
Background to research topic
Specific problem(s) to be examined: either set out the problem(s) and why it
is necessary to evolve explanatory hypotheses, or identify possible hypothe
ses from an analysis of prior work
Methods of research proposed, and plan and timetable of work
Resources available and required
Any other information in support of your proposal
The proposal should include correct citations to the literature and a brief
bibliography
Note that the research has to satisfy academic criteria in that it criticall
y examines the hypothesis by scientific, historical, linguistic or other app
ropriate research methods, subjecting the evidence to critical analysis and
the results to defensible critical interpretation.
